LORE: The Reluctant Damsel and the Dysfunctional Hero

The city closest to the border. It is a city filled with traveling people and inns that hold many of the roughest people in Ighten. It's a good place to find weapons and an even better place to find trouble.

Tenele closed her eyes tightly. She was so foolish... so so foolish. Why couldn't she just keep herself under control... She shook her head and turned, to climb up the pile of gold with him...

* * *

Talon was walking an eerie dark tunnel, trying to find one that led into the large chamber. He held his hand out, a small orbe producing just enough light that he wouldn't run into any walls...

He couldn't see any end in sight... or at least one that led to the tunnel where his sister was...

Talon kept going, despite the fact it felt as if he was being watched... and the fact he kept here this eerie sound of something breathing... Finally he just couldn't take it any more... He flew around for a look at the creature following him, having expected it to be nothing more than a small animal... If only it had been.

Kami darted and tripped as the creature blew a breath of fire in their dirtection. Kaze stood her ground. Stock, still. Her heart racing but her breath coming steady. She gripped her staff in front of her and perpared for its attack...

Vlad looked back at Tenele as he climbed up, wanting to read her mind, deciding not to. He reached back and took her hand, hers warm and his cool in comparison. "No slipping," he teased as they approached the top. Looking at her instead of ahead of him, he didn't look down till he stepped on something stiff and brittle that cracked under his weight. He looked down and found a red-brown chunk of shell at his feet. There, nestled into the top of the hoard, were three giant round eggshells, each nearly as tall as Vlad....each empty. The vampire's eyes narrowed. "Interesting," he said darkly, his mouth rising into a grin.

* * * *

The Dragonet looked at Kaze's staff, cocking its head curiously. It's head low, it moved quickly in on her, stretching out its long neck to investigate the stick and then clamping onto it, barely missing her hands. The dragonet blew a long, hot gust of wind in her face.

"Gah!" Kaze gasped and Kami sprang back to his feet as the Dragonet clampped its jaws onto her staff.

"Get back beast!" he yelled.

"Wait!" Kaze yelled at him, staring at the Dragonet with interest. "It's a baby.''

"That's a big baby, Kaze." Kami stated, warily watching the Dragonet while trying to guard Kaze from any attack it threatened. Kaze dared to lift her hand and touch it.

"Hey little guy..." she cooed and gently reached her hand over to its head.

Tenele wrapped her fingers around his hand as he took it. She walked with him up to the top of the hoard, and since he was looking at her she realized the egg shells before him...

She stared in awe... and uncertainty.

"I think thats a bad sign, Vlad..." she said, noting the slight grin...

* * *

Talon dove at the blast of fire, that seemed feeble but even it could do the job well. He rolled to his feet and was turning when another figure stood in his way, red eyes. He dove again as a burst of fire shot where he had been standing...

He didn't have time to role to his feet, claws sliced at his arm... "Ahh!"

* * *

Tenele's head came up. She recognised the yell... She turned in the direction of the larger tunnel... "Talon..." she said softly.

The dragonet's red eyes narrowed curiously at Kaze's hand as it approached its face. It was more tense after Kami had yelled, and looked at him fiercely, then back at Kaze as her hand grazed its face. For a long moment, it stared quietly at Kaze, breathing slow, warm breaths onto her face. But its eyes were the keen eyes of a wild creature, hardly tame. Sniffing at her arm, it finally decided this was food after all.

The dragonet's two-foot long rows of teeth snapped open, releasing the staff and quickly bit down again on Kaze's arm, one row of teeth gnashing in around her shoulder and the other just belpw her elbow. The dragonet twisted its head roughly, trying to rip the piece off so it could chew. The teeth went deep, scraping into her bones.

Vladimir looked in the direction of the sound. "I had no idea your brother was so fond of children," he remarked with a psychotic glint in his eyes. But he knew that a dragonet was no ordinary foe to fight; their skin was tough and they were remarkably difficult to kill because of their speed and strength, not to mention fire. "I'd like to watch this," he agreed in response to Tenele's unspoken request to investigate.

There was no way back out into the large cavern, but several smaller tunnels branched off from the room they were in. There were two tunnels that seemed to lead to where Talon's voice had come from, but there was no telling without going in whether they went to the same place or not. Vlad climbed back to the bottom of the gold pile and eyed the two tunnels thoughtfully.

Tenele looked at the tunnels and slid down the pile of gold to get a closer look…

“Vlad we’ll find him quicker if we split up,” she told him, eyeing one of the tunnels…

It was surprising how panicked she looked. She was supposed to hate Talon, yet she seemed afraid for his safety. She looked at both tunnels, unable to choose which one she should take.

* * *

Talon rolled over, clutching his bleeding arm as he tried to avoid the dragons in the dark. They breathed another burst of fire and he barely missed it, he could smell the stench of burnt hair… it might have came a bit too close…

Vlad scoffed. "And what would you do if you found him? Teach it the ABC's?" he challenged. "Come,: he ordered and walked briskly into the right of the two tunnels.

Tenele scowled, but he was right. She wasn't exactly the strongest person in the world, and her magic abilities included healing... thats it.

She followed after him, but hesitated... What if he was down the other one and they didn't get to him in time...

Tenele looked one final time down that tunnel...

* * *

The dragons had managed to burn something... maybe there fire was so hot it burned the ground and could catch it on fire... Talon didn't know.... He was just surrounded by a wall of fire. He tried to put it out... but nothing worked with him... He had guessed correctly moments before the fire started. Dragon's are immune to magic... thats why slayers never practiced it...

He coughed. He wasn't stupid enough to try and jump through the flames...

The more Talon tried to find a way out and try and protect himself against the angry dragon babies the more he found his breath coming in short gasps...

On of the dragons managed to set his pants leg on fire, making him yell as he tried to beat it out. Moving so quickly made his breath quicken, and the smoke began to fill his lungs....

Vlad heard Talon shout out in pain, and felt his adrenaline rise. That idiot would get himself killed, all as part of some ridiculous plot meant to help him. Vlad knew he wasn't going to get out of the curse, but Talon seemed to think he possessed these idealized qualities that were utterly meaningless to him...that poor fool believed in him, regardless of what he'd said at the inn. Vlad knew that faith was misplaced, and as he heard Talon's cry in the distance he became aware of what a shame it was. The idiot was going to die for no good reason, and it was...irritating. Perhaps that was the reason his legs suddenly thrust him forward into a sprint down the tunnel in the direction of the noise, leaving it to Tenele to catch up to his superhuman pace.

The air grew warmer and warmer as he wormed through the tunnel, until he saw the area ahead lit with orange glow. WHen he turned a sharp twist in the tunnel, he found two dragonets standing amidst a blaze of fire. Vlad saw no sign of Talon, until he realized the elf must be in the center of that ring of fire. Without much thought, he ran into the room and leapt up onto the back of one dragonet, ripping his clawed hands across the back of its neck. The wound drew a hot stream of blood that boiled on his hands, but wasn't enough to seriously injuure the dragonet. It did, however, turn its aggression toward the thing that had leapt onto its back, twisting its neck around to gnash at him.

Vlad disappeared from the creatures sight and reappeared in front of its unguarded chest, extending his claws and plunging them into the creature's breast. It screeched furiously in pain and whirled its heaed back at him, bowling him sideways. Vlad staggered dizzily and tried to bring the creature back into focus.

Tenele watched, wide-eyed as Vlad disappeared so fast into the darkness that not even her running could keep up with him. She was worried for both of them now, because she couldn't see what was going on and because Vlad was ill... dying at that... Her feet echoed against the walls and it almost felt as if she were totally alone in the caves.

* * *

Talon fell on the floor, unable to recieve any more clean air into his lungs. He coughed, blinking as the fire around him became a blur. He tried one last time to put the flames out... and to kill the dragons... but nothing worked.

Vlad regained his senses just in time to dodge a lunging set of razor-teeth. He rushed forward while the dragonet searched for its missing prey and brought his claws out to their full length. Coming into the dragonet's chest, he drove the spikes in toward its heart and ripped inward and down with all his strength. This time his attack did not miss, and the dragon shuddered in agony. It threw its head around toward Vlad and clamped onto his shoulder.

Vlad groaned and clasped onto the dragon's nostril, trying to pull it loose. The dragon lifted itshuge taloned foot and slammed it into his chest, knocking him back onto the ground. It was about to hold him down while it tore his arm from his body, but in an instant the body disappeared from under it.

Vlad rematerialized inside the ring of fire, where he grasped his shoulder and looked around for Talon. He found the elf choking on the ground. "Get up, idiot," he growled half from impatience and half from pain as he dragged the elf up from the ground, shouldering him on his good arm and drawing in a deep, shaky breath. Focusing his energy, he gritted his teeth and initiated the teleport, reappearing with Vlad a few yards away in the direction he'd just come from. As soon as the spell was complete, Vlad collapsed to his knees, losing his grip on Talon. The world was spinning in a red haze of pain; it felt like an iron clamp was wrenching over his heart.

Talon coughed when he hit the ground with Vlad. He could smell fresh air and it filled his lungs, dispelling the smoke. He breathed and looked over at Vlad, who was seemingly in pain...

Talon coughed, getting to his knees and then to his feet.

He could here to sound of feet echoing, coming towards them. He pulled Vlad's arm around his shoulder. "Thanks, but it seems you need more help than me," Talon said, putting his arm around Vlad to better carry him.

He hoped that was Tenele coming down the cave towards them.

"Tenele!" he called. "Tenele help, Vlad needs help..."

Tenele's heart felt as if it stopped when she heard Talon's voice. He was dying... Vlad was dying!

Tenele ran as hard as she could, and almost ran into them in the darkness. She could barely see Vlad and Talon, but she knew enough by the way Vlad seemed slumped that he was hurt...

"Vlad!" she said and rushed over quickly.

"Tenele we need to get him out of here, he won't hold his own against those dragons..."

Tenele pulled Vlad's other arm over her shoulder. She wasn't nearly as tall as Talon, so she wasn't doing much good, but she did her best by standing on her tip toes as she walked.

Kaze's facial experssion changed as the Dragonet snapped its jaws over her arm. At frist, sh wasn't aware of the pain, and could only watched for seconds as Kami yelled and began to beat the head of the Dragonet. When it jerked it's head to rip her arm off, she screamed agonizingly.

Kami tried desparatly to yank the beasts jaws off of Kaze, but it was too strong. Tears streamed down Kaze's face as she resolved to never again pet an unknown animal and began, religiously to beat it's head with her staff.

The pain in her arm was too unbearable, her arm would be practically of no use if they didn't get to a healer soon. Desparatly, and sparring no mercy, she casted her earth spell and sent the Dragonet careening to the ceiling. The ceiling of the tunnel cracked, but not the Dragonet. All she did was knock it out as it fell back to the ground.

Her arm free, Kaze lost her breath, unable to move through all the pain in her arm, collapsed. Kami screamed.

Vlad forced his legs to move under him, too short of breath to protest as he was lifted up and half-carried down the tunnel. Things seemed to be moving in slow motion. In his spinning consciousness, he thought he heard a woman's scream, but it could have been the hiss of fire surrounding them.

Behind them, the remaining dragon sniffed at its wounded kin and turned an angry glare on the three who had invaded their cave. It ran toward them, fire shooting from its mouth, focusing its attention of Talon, its escaped prey. It shot out its neck and went to snap Talon in half with its jaws.

* * *

The dragonet attacking Kaze shook its head dizzily, not sure what had hit it. It screeched unhappily and, deciding Kami had been responsible, lunged to bite him. The ceiling a few yards away was higher up, and water dripped from it. From it protruded several long, solid stone stalactites.
