Soran nodded sternly and held his hand securely around the back of her head as she grabbed his neck. He looked around at the damage. Some men lay dead, some wounded, but considering how well they'd been surprised, they'd dealt with the attack well.
Dozens of people were approaching them without crowding. They wanted to know what was to be done about the injured, and food. Whether or not to move camp now. Whether lady Mizuki could say something to the shellshocked children. Two stonefaced men and one who looked ready to kill were holding onto Sid none too gently, and asking what should be done with him.
Soran was contemplating it all when he glanced down with a jerk of surprise as he felt something touch his wounded hand. He fought the urge to strike the person to the ground and turned to see a young boy, maybe two years older than Rai, staring at him with such solemn calmness that he didnt seem to fit the rest of the scenario.
A faint glow formed around Soran's hand, and he felt the wound begin to itch, like it was healing too fast. Soran planted a firm hand on his shoulder and jerked the boy away, then held him there. The boy looked up at him without flinching.
"Daren," he said, fishing the name out of his head from parents day. "You can heal?" It wasn't quite a question.
"I should have told you sooner. I've never told anyone," he said, and the first lines of uncertainty formed on his face and finally made him look as young as he was. This was a secret he'd kept all his life. He was like Rai.
"Please help my daughter," Soran said, kneeling beside him so that he and Rai were face to face. The dark haired boy blushed. "And then the others, to whatever extent you can."
The boy stared at Rai and touched the side of her face uncertainly. "I can't always control it," he said, but the glow came around his hand and filtered around her body. The wounds began to close; not as quickly as Rai's power, and not as comfortably, but it was working. After a few minutes, he blinked like he'd been in a trance. "Um...How do you feel?" he asked her shyly.

Rai smiled softly. "Better, thank you!" she said. She was shocked to see that someone could heal like her, as young as her. She hadn't seen a child healer before, not like herself. She wondered if the same effects applied. Did he get their symptoms and their pain?
"Do you feel bad after healing?" she asked the boy softly.

'Heh,' Mizuki thought to herself, 'Healing children... we have some luck then.' It seemed ironic, but now at least they could do something about the wounded. She sighed against Soran's shoulder. It seemed the children needed her most, but she had no energy to tend to them.
"Abby," she called to one of the mother's over to where Mizuki was clutching Soran's back and the two healer children were. "Children need to be calmed, but I have not the... energy to do so."
"But what could I be expected to do?" Abby asked, giving the rogue Mizuki leaned on a glance. She felt it odd to be talking as if they were the only two there. If Mizuki could remember correctly from Parents Day, this woman held a beautiful, hypnotic voice that calmed even the most restless of children. Mizuki gave Abby her best smile.
"You can do it," she reassured the woman, looking pointedly at her. A look that said "I know what you can do". Abby gluped and held her throat. Beautiful her voice was, Abby had endured years of other's vicious jealousy that caused her to hide her gift. How Mizuki knew... but then Mizuki did a lot of things that none could fanthom.
Smiling nervously back at Mizuki, Abby nodded and turned on her heal towards the children who needed her.

Soran tried to listen in on Mizuki's conversation without losing his careful focus on Rai. He didn't trust magic, and if she showed any sign of pain the kid was going to be in for a nasty surprise. But food and supplies were scarce; he didn't want to risk Rai's wound getting infected and having her die of exposure out here. It wasn't until Rai asked him if it hurt that he even once considered whether the boy would face any consequences for healing her.
"Just a little tired," the boy answered her, but his face was too cheerful; it didn't match the serious maturity the boy had displayed earlier. Soran considered which was the act, but didn't ask. If the boy felt well enough to heal others, he wanted him put to work. No one could afford to be pampered here today.
Soran touched Rai's bangs lightly, breaking whatever moment was happening with her and Daven. He didn't seem to have any words at the moment. He needed to try to think. It wasn't usually such a challenge. A bead of sweat trailed down his forehead. "Do you feel well now?" he asked Rai, glancing at Daven like he wasn't sure the boy's power could be trusted. It had taken a long time for him to trust Rai.

"Much better," she told her father with a bright smile. "I can help heal people."
Although it was probably not the best idea. Since her healing abilities had gotten stronger, so were the effects on her body. Though, Rai did not care what happened to her. She only cared what happened to other people. And if hurting her, helped other people. Well, that was just fine and dandy to her.

Unfortunately, it wasn't fine and dandy to her frowning adoptive father. "You may help them as much as your strength allows, but I want you not to use your power." As if anticipating an argument, he held up a finger to make her wait. "Your ability is changing, Rai. Until we understand what's happening, it's not worth the risk. Do you understand?" His green eyes were very serious, but his voice was closer to that of a concerned friend's than a commanding father's. He had a lot of respect for Rai's bravery, but had no intention of exploiting her health just when they'd finally gotten it back.

Soran bit back an impatient sigh as Rai neglected his question, holding Mizuki's body up. It was tough doing this alone. The rogue dug a roll of bandages from his coat pocket, managing both their weights, and handed them to Rai. "There is more than one way to heal. If you're bored, get some practice with a method that doesn't threaten your life," he suggested to Rai, managing not to sound as frayed as he felt. It wasn't his family he was upset with, though his concern compounded his anger.
He turned with a cold gaze toward the men who were holding Sid captive. "What do we do with him, Sir?" one asked while the other looked ready to spit him in an instant with his spear.
"Bind him. We may need him," Soran said flatly, as if he couldn't care less about the man's safety. At the moment, he real couldn't. Soran was fuming at their failure, and most of the anger wound up directed inward. He should have trained the guards of what to look for in the night. He should have planned better for the attack. No, he'd come back broken and breathless; he did all he could. No, he could have done more...probably.
He shook off the useless doubts in his head and dedicated the rest of the day to taking a careful roll of the names of every survivor and a list of their skills, assigning peopel to collect food and treat the injured, training the remaining men who could fight in basic battle strategies and proper lookout procedures, and making ready to move camp. When night fell, they were not preparing their bedrolls, but loading up for a march. The plan was to get as far as possible by dark and avoid any more surprise attacks in the morning. The closest main town was a dangerous goal, as it could very well be Arken's next target. They aimed west instead of north, toward a smaller town several miles further away. There was a shortage of animals to carry the wounded, though thanks to Evan, most were able to walk. Soran began the trip with Mizuki on his back and Rai on foot beside him, and they walked through the darkness of the Ashgrown forest with as little torchlight as possible to betray their location.
