(LORE) HEALING

The city closest to the border. It is a city filled with traveling people and inns that hold many of the roughest people in Ighten. It's a good place to find weapons and an even better place to find trouble.

Soran was a few yards behind Mizuki when she turned back toward the town. Soran nodded to her and fell in stride beside her as she reached him. Back at the camp, people were running to and fro, shouting in panic as they found themselves circled together by a good 15 Arken soldiers. THe soldiers looked well rested and refreshed. The refugees didn't. WOmen and children had banded toward the middle of the large, chaotic group while the men who hadn't gone after the spies held up weapons warningly at the soldiers. The spies had been a good diversion; their fittest men were off chasing bait, probably into an ambush. Fear was almost tangible in the air as Soran and Mizuki burst into the clearing and surveyed the situation. Soran didn't see Sid. Damn it. Damn it damn it damn it.

Mizuki didn't stop at the clearing to observe, she just surged forward with a mix of fury and absolute power that threatened to put her into a coma state. The power that surge through her veins made her head and body ache but not stop. A gutteral cry escaped her mouth, like she was a dragon on a rampage. Four of the soldiers moved forward to stop her in her tracks but feel down several feet before they had even approached her.

Dazed, the soldiers attempted to stand again but Mizuki was already upon them like an animal. Thrusting fists and twirling her body about with the grace of a feline, Mizuki was deadly in her fury. The four engaged in combat with her were trying hard not to fail, but Mizuki's power to alter their feelings was overbearing. Their wills broke and they coward before her feet, like she was a dreaded creature of the night.

But cowaring did not save them as she growled and attacked again. She was rampaging with a dangerous power that was quickly dwindling out. The one who lead the group of soldiers saw this, and advanced more of his men upon her without a second thought.

Soran watched Mizuki in astonishment. He'd never seen her kick this much ass, but he could feel the tingling of her power in the air. He knew the state she'd been in this morning. That hadn't changed. He dreaded what cost she might be paying for their safety. He charged in beside her and braced himself to fight, putting himself between her and her attackers. A few men approached with swords and sticks to do what they could, but the real warriors had run after the spies. "Don't destroy yourself, Mizuki, he breathed as three soldiers engaged him at once. His held up against them, but it was like he was watching himself through a jar. His movements weren't as fast as he wanted. Two men went down, and four more joined the third. Soran couldn't keep track of it all. He finally felt what he knew was coming; a kick spun in sideways and blew him to the ground. A moment later a sword was at his throat, not moving. His final opponent stared him down, holding the sword in one hand and a wide gash on his stomach with the other. The rogue lay still and stared down his captor, cold eyes harsh and expressionless.

Another soldier ran up behind Mizuki and tried to grab her from behind.

She had tired, Soran's words echoing in her mind to not destroy herself but she couldn't stop. The man who attempted to catch her from behind felt her hand close on his wrist then twist it behind his back. He grunted, but used to much more pain than that, he easily countered her attack and threw her to the ground. The wind was knocked out of Mizuki as she hit the ground, where she lay permanately as the last of her powerful resolve to fight left her.

"Are you quite finished?" the soldier asked her sourly as he stood above her to keep her in place. Mizuki just glared up at him then spat at his boots. The soldier growled and moved to kick her, but his commander stopped him.

"She's down as it is, don't damage the seer more than needed." the commander barked.

Soran blinked over at the commander. Seer? Had he recognized her powers? The man wore a sneer as he paced toward her, but then the man standing over Soran broke the eerie silence that had befallen the clearing. "Boss, look at this one," he said. The commander as well as the eyes of every nervous refugee followed to Soran. The commander walked up next to him and eyed the rogue. Then his eyes widened as well.

"It's impossible for you to be alive," he said flatly, clearly confused and trying not to look stupid.

"It appears that I am," Soran noted irately.

The eyes of the crowd grew suspicious and confused.

"You appear to have lost your touch, Liutenant Rhen," the commander said, testing.

"Nightblade, what is he talking about?" Demanded one of the men who was holding a soldier in the same fashion as the man who held Soran, by knifepoint.

"Didn't he tell you? He's one of us," smiled the commander.

Soran's eyes narrowed. This was bad. "How did you find this place?"

"We caught up with one of your little groups." He was addressing all of them now, ignoring Soran. "There are few loyalties that can't be overruled with torture. Now, it would be a hassle to arrest you all, so if you cooperate, we'll make this as painless as possible. His ocnfidence wavered a bit as he looked at the angry crowd, but he knew part of their suspicion was toward the rogue now and not just him. This would be easy.

"Kernel Ambrose," a strong voice came from the center of the group. Sid was stepping forward from the masses with an authoritative posture, looking for all he was worth like an indignantly pissed monarch. "Mind informing me just what the hell you're doing complicating my command?"

Ambrose looked astonished. "Y-your what?" he squeaked.

"No salute for a superior officer, Ambrose?"

"S-...Sorry, General, Sir! What are you doing here?"

"I'm here on direct command from our Queen. Or is it difficult to understand why our majesty has taken an interest in this particular group?" he said crossly, gesturing in turn to Soran, and then to the mysterious Seer.

"But the rest of them..."

"I do not question my orders, Kernal, and I do not expect it from you."

Soran just stared. He had no idea what was going on, but the kernel didn't seem completely convinced. He glanced at Mizuki, wondering if she could make that last ounce of trust for them or if she was truly burned out.

"Rhen was never one of you from the start." Mizuki spat out, remembering Soran's memories clearer than the daylight sun. "He was just a victim of your Queen's twisted rule." The malice in her voice was all the fight she had left, which was clearly seen by the soldier guarding her. He took his opportunity to completely silence Mizuki and hauled her up against his chest. Her back pressing against his hard chest as he held her tightly to him. So tight, Mizuki felt as if her ribs would break.

"One more word halfing, and I will personally see to your punishment." Mizuki did not like what he was hinting at.

"Stop!" Soran yelled at Mizuki's captor, sitting up like there wasn't a knife to his throat. There was naked fear in his voice. It made Ambrose and Sid both stare in astonishment. Soran's captor backed up a step to make room, no longer sure if he was allowed to kill this person.

"You've gotten soft, Soran," Ambrose sneered.

"Neither of them are to be hurt," Sid huffed. It sounded defensive. It was too late. Sid was never good at hiding his feelings very long.

"General Borden, you seem to have mixed loyalties here," Ambrose said darkly.

Sid frowned for a second, then smirked and gave a shrug. "I s'pose." Ambrose didn't even see Sid draw his knife, but he felt it strike home in his heart. He stared in astonishment and fell gurgling to the ground.

"Kill them!" he rasped as he collapsed to the ground, dying.

The soldiers closed in on them without another thought. Mizuki's captured smiled twistedly and began to drag her away, she unable to do a thing. Damn, why had she attacked so recklessly earlier? Now she had nothing to protect herself with, no physical or mental strength. ll she could do was lay there at this brute's command. Damn it all! It was Gaberial all over again! Before she really had discovered much of her powers.

Her mind started to panic. Soran was within that mess that she was quickly being dragged away from. Did he have any fight left? And Rai, what happened to her?

---

One of the mothers who had been with Mizuki through the Parents Day event had scooped up Rai long before the attack had started. This woman had had enough sense to hide with her and her children and Rai while the chaotic massacre took place.

Soran glared at the guard above him, his eyes feral and arctic. The soldier panicked, and struck down the the sword. Soran didnt have a lot of choice in the matter; he caught the blow in his hand, and used his arm to divert the strike sideways. The narrow blade slid neatly between the bones that led to his last two fingers and out the back of his hand. The diversion served its purpose, at least. A second later, the soldier lay dead on the ground with at least three more fatal gashes than necessary carved into his neck.

Soran whirled on Sid, and found him fighting with more soldiers. He didn't understand the man's motives, but he was pissed. He approached sid with both blades drawn.

"Look, you're mad, I know, but I'm with you on this," Sid said, seeming much more worried about SOran than the two men he was holding off.

"Mad is a fatal understatement," Soran hissed.

"You have a fever," Sid warned, "Try to think clearly.

Soran made a fierce shout that came out more like a roar and swung at Sid's head. "You dare accuse me of lacking presence of mind, you doublecrossing turd?" he scathed. The words didn't seem like his own, but there they were.

Sid looked shocked, hurt. "If you had half the wits about you that you think you have, you'd notice that you're little girlfriend's missing!" Sid returned darkly, unable to help his anger even if Soran was mostly right about him.

That made Soran stop. Sid almost would have preferred the anger on the rogue's face to the naked fear that suddenly paled it. He spun and glanced at the dying battle around them; they were going to win. But Mizuki was nowhere to be seen. Not Rai either, for that matter.

Crap. She could have gone in any of a hundred directions. He didn't see her among the fallen. "Mizuki?" he shouted, doubting she could respond. Mizuki!

His first shout worked. "Soran!!" she practically screamed back in bloody murder. The soldier cursed, he had hoped she had lost the will to talk, but he silenced her with a quick smack across her face. He dragged her more quickly away into the trees but someone stopped him. A man and his teenage son stood, glaring him down and seething with anger.

They came upon him without word and the soldier lost Mizuki has he fell to the two men's attack. Mizuki was left on the ground, limp with a red welt on her face, screaming out Soran's name.

Soran didn't think, he just ran with all he had after the sound of Mizuki's voice. He pinned his wounded hand to the front of his shirt and stumbled through the woods, dodging trees as he went. He finally came up on three forms fighting on the ground. Mizuki lay nearby. Good or bad, Soran didn't glance at the fight. He dashed to Mizuki and skidded into the leaves neat to her, lifting her upper body in his arms and cradling it to his, his face pressed next to her slender neck. "I'm here, I'm here," he kept saying, like he had to convince himself as well. The gesture seemed frantic and sloppy even to him, but he couldn't let go of her. Maybe the fever had gotten to his head just a bit.

She didn't cry, probably from not having the energy too. But she felt so safe in his arms. When he held her, it was like nothing else mattered. She wrapped her arms gingerly around him, it was an effort in itself, but she did it none-the-less.

"What's going to happen to us?" she breathed into his ear. She was scared, angry, tired, in love with a man she might lose at any moment. This was just too much for her. "I love you, don't leave me..."

Soran closed his eyes and tried to clear his thoughts, but all he felt was adrenaline. A plan, a plan. Think straight. "They're all dead by now. We've won, for a short time. You're safe, I swear," he babbled dizzily. He was starting to be able to feel the warmth of her skin on his cheek. Unfortunately, also the distant throb in his hand that he knew was going to get worse. For it to be this numb, shock had to be doing more than its part, but it wouldn't last. Feeling Mizuki there was worth the sensation in the wound.

"We need to get back," he said, trying to think. The two who had attacked Mizuki's captor now stared at them as if they were simply awaiting command. As if they weren't staring at a dangerously overexerted woman and her shellshocked, feverish lover. They were all the leadership this group had, and they had to go back.

Soran shifted Mizuki's weight upward and lifted her next to him, then hunched her up onto his back piggy-style like she weighed nothing. He was riding enough adrenaline to make it back to the group, or at least he was fairly sure. They still had to find Rai; that put the extra kick into his steps that he needed. They sent the man and son ahead and trodged back toward the group.

The battle ended in the refugees winning. They still held losses, though few they were. The survivors had had their chance to get revenge, and they had used it wisely. Now, those who went into hiding, timidly came out of their hiding places and faced the victory with smiles. The woman who held Rai scanned the area for Soran and/or Mizuki. When her daughter tugged her dress and pointed to where Soran was feverishly searching with Mizuki sprawled on his back, the woman hurried over to them.

"Here she is, I kept her safe." she called over to them, approaching them carefully. They look dazed but ready to shed blood. A smiled spread on Mizuki's tired face as she gazed at Rai's face. She was safe, that was all she needed to know.

"Thank you..." Mizuki whispered with all the gratitude she could muster.

Guess its time for her to grow up :P

Don't know.

IC:

Rai was glad to find her parents. She ran to them and through her arms around their necks. Holding on tightly to them. "I got scared," she admitted, to her father. "I don't want to get seperated again!"
