I must confess I tried allegedly the best of the MMO's (World of Warcraft) and I wasn't really impressed. The fault wasn't really with Blizzard, the game design was great. It was the people playing the game. I think MMO's have become a victim of their own popularity. Suffering from the scourge of leetspeak, immature power-levelers, and resource farming ebay salemen, the people in the game just ruin the immersion. I just could not suspend my disbeleif. The end result is that the game felt more like a chat room with fancy graphics than a roleplaying game. So I'm not really a fan of the Massive Multiplayer.
I've played Neverwinter Nights. That by far is the my favorite Multiplayer RPG. It's almost like Heirot, except more structured with the rules, like combat. But the great thing about it is that Neverwinter allows players to create their own story, albeit the DM has to have some decent coding skills. That, and the communites are much tighter (72 people max per server.) People are more prone to act within the atmosphere of the game, and breaking character midadventure is generally frowned upon. The end result is that the game is much more immersive than its massive cousins.
Now I can't post without saying something about Oblivion. Never before have I expirienced an RPG that felt so real. The people at Bethesda are true craftsman, and also the smart physics people at Havoc. So much work has gone into creating the world of the Elder Scrolls. Every character, every town feels like it has a story behind it. As an nice antedote, Patrick Stewart, the voice of the emporer, commented that in all his career as an actor, he never received as detailed of notes as he did for his part in the game. That's how much thought went into this game, and it deserves all the acolades its gotten. Although it's scares me to think that my computer is a better roleplayer than the general population found on WOW.
BTW, has anyone read Steve Jackson's "Munchkin's guide to powergaming?"

Great opinions! but as for WoW being the best mmo is a bunch of crock lol. There is no "best" mmo out there... it all depends on your play style... if you like things easy and want /ooc to be an aol chat room then WoW is the way to go... if you're into end game content then i'd prob say EQ1 for that, and if you love questing i'd say EQ2. As for the elder scrolls series... never liked any before oblivion... i love the lore that's involved in Oblivion, one of the nicer done ones out there... But for me the rest isn't quiet there, it's lacking the diversity to do whatever you want (you can to a degree but you're still focused on a single grand plan). The only one right now that i see as being a lot of everything together is VG but i can't expect you all to see why coz i really can't say... ahh well, guess my original point is that There's a game for everyone, and anyone that says that a certain game is the best is speaking for themselves
It's like saying eq2 is the best game and simply relying on the graphics.
I personally am a big fan of EQ1.. sure the graphics aren't amazingly up to date, and sure the low end game is pretty much the same as 4 years ago.. but i was able to do all the end game stuff. The complexity of a 72 person, level 70 raid on an entire zone that requires nothing but accurate precision is fantastic for me! I've done the end game for all eq expantions (except for the latest one, prophecy of ro) and the peeps that say eq sucks never took the time to experiance the true end game... there's nothing like a 6 hour raid and 0 corpse runs! lol all this talk about it makes me want to go play eq again. argh! love it! lol. anywho, my mindless ramblings aside, time for work!
oh on a side note, i'd have to say that VG isn't a "newb" game... if you're dumb you're not gonna be ab le to play it! the quests require thinking, the game requires thinking, and you sure as hell can't just hit auto attack and walk away like people say (and those that say that about warriors in eq haven't played a raiding warrior lol)
