Kratos looked back at her seriously then nodded, smiling. "Good." he simply said and all three of them walked into the house. When they walked back into the kitchen Neko was fighting back her angry retorts at the people within, but her glares were escaping so she tried directing them at the walls.

"That's perfectly fine, dear," Maria assured warmly when her guests returned, "I understand you've probably been through a lot. But you're welcome here, and if there's anything we can do to make you feel more at ease, you just tell us." She looked at them with real concern in her eyes as she ladled out soup and placed the bowls onto the table. "But eat up! Eat!" She urged them toward their seats.

Laya took up her spoon and began to eat, the flavor of the soup was delicious, the best food she had had in a while. She ate it quickly, maybe too quickly, but it had been at least three to four days since she had ate anything.
"Might I ask a question of you sir, " she asked to the man at the table. "When all of this started did you have any knew people enter your village? Any strangers? What about animals. Anyone adopted or brought in new cattle from some where else?"

Both Neko and Kratos ate. Neko listened to the conversation Laya was starting up with great interest and Kratos was busy thinking about how he got himself into these things. And he was constantly at his sister about slurping. It went like this:
"Stop it." Kratos would say.
"No." Neko would strike back, knowing it annoyed him.

Fandir looked over at Laya and nodded understandingly. "I know what you're thinking, and believe me we've thought it as well, but this is a quiet town. Very few outsiders come around here, and our animals are all bred and raised here. Now that we're running low, we're all trying to get the money to purchase new parent animals from other farms surrounding Lowight, but we're hesitant to import anything when it seems this strange disease would just take them anyway.
"Then shouldn't we buy medicine, while there's still time and money left to do it?" demanded the elder son, who had been brooding quietly at the end of the table.
"Thomas, we've already been over that," asserted Fandir sternly. "No one has been able to create a medicine that can fight this disease, and it leaves no symptoms to show what type of illness it is. A very rapid, sudden death with no external symptoms is difficult to cure. It's clear this is the work of magic."
"But not necessarily the unicorn's magic! Besides, we don't know that for sure!" pleaded the boy.
"Thomas, this is the end of the discussion. Eat your dinner and do as your father says," ordered Maria sharply.
Thomas ignored his mother and glared at his father angrily, but kept silent. "I'm full. Thank you for dinner," the boy said blandly, standing and carrying his half-finished plate to the sink. He left the room, which was then full of an awkward silence.

Neko's eyes followed the elder son. 'He's in agreence with us...' she thought and felt the urge to question the boy. She paid no heed to the silence that fell upon the room. Kratos, on the other hand, had followed Neko's gaze and twitched slightly in annoyance. Was he just being protective or... was it something else?

Laya finished her soup quietly as she contemplated the other possibilities to what the problem could be. Tomorrow she thought she might go asking around... or snooping around rather. There had to be some explanation for it. She had to find out what was causing it. She couldn't believe suck an innocent creature could do so much harm.
"Miss..." Laya said and looked up to the kind woman. "Is there a place I could bathe... and do you happen to have any clean clothes I could borrow... I'm afraid this has gone beyond decency."
Laya lifted her empty bowl, taking the last piece of her bread and popping it into her mouth. She placed the bowl in the sink and turned to the woman, awaiting a reply.

Neko had also finished and followed suit to Laya. She was really interested in asking that boy some questions. Without waiting for her brother, she excused herself room the room and trailed after the boy.
Kratos sputtered and looked after his sister in surprise. He finished quickly and placed his bowl in the sink.
"Excuse me, I must go after her before she does something stupid." he explained and went after his sister who was trailing the boy who seemed to have gone to the stables.

Maria looked at Laya with a tired grin. "My, your friends certainly are energetic, aren't they?" she said, ladling out more soup for her husband and Laya.
Thomas walked swiftly toward the stables, taking his frustration out on the tall grass, which he kicked half-heartedly as he went. He wasn't sure what he expected to find - he'd looked so many times already, but there had to be some reason. It couldn't be his fault...not that one. The closer the town came to catching the unicorn, the more restless he got.
He spun around suddenly at the barn door as he heard steps in the grass behind him. It was two of their guests from dinner. "Is something wrong?" he said defensively, trying to be polite.

Neko waved friednly like and smiled charmingly. She closed the distance between them and stood in front of him.
"I wanted to ask you about the unicorn." she said bluntly. "I noticed your attitude with your family about it..." Kratos reached them finally and waved to the boy in turn.
"Same." he said. Just so he had a purpose to be here.

Laya nodded, wondering why the woman chose not to answer her question about a place to bathe and clean up... and the clothes. She guessed the woman hadn't heard her... She was speaking rather softly.
Laya began to eat the bowl of soup the woman had pored her, pausing to speak. "Ma'am... I have been traveling a while and I really do need a bath. I would hate to intrude... but if you don't mind I'd like a place to bathe... and some clothes if you wish to spare them...." She kept her head down towards her bowl, staring at the soup as her spoon moved around idly.

Thomas eyed the two guests distrustfully. "I understand how it probably seems, but no offense, you don't know anything about the situation. Believe me, there's nothing you can say to convince me that my parents haven't already said," he warned defensively.

Maria's face perked up as Laya's request gave her a way to be important again. "Certainly, dear! My clothes will be a bit big, but will fit you decently. There is a creek just behind our house where we often bathe, but recently we've stuck to filling the tub in our washroom instead, on account of the unicorn. We'll draw you up a nice warm bath and you'll feel good as new, dear," she said happily, rising from the table and gesturing for her remaining son to go bring buckets to the tub.

Thomas hesitated, reddening a bit as he saw that they weren't there to criticize him. "I just know that they mustn't shoot him. He would never do the bad things they claim," he said idealistically, unbolting the barn door and sliding it back so that he could go in. "When I was a child, I caught the blue plague and nearly died. Just when I was about to give up, he appeared outside my window and put his face inside and lay across my legs while I lay in bed. He stayed all day, and somehow I felt braver and stronger with him there. I stopped being scared and started fighting, and managed to come back even though the entire town had considered me as good as dead. That was before they scared him away, though. But I know, just from being with him that short time....there's not an ounce of meanness in him! He might be afraid of us, but he wouldn't hurt us like this," the boy said as he came up to a stall where a cow and her young calf were lying deathly still on the straw-matted floor, too weak to move. The animals in the stalls on either side didn't look much better.
