Lore: Behind Stone Walls

It's home to many monasteries of the martial arts. Amidst the tall and welcoming trees there can be found statues of heroes and saints....

Eosan crept into the cave, a little unsure of it's safety at first. The others seemed to be more at ease, however, and he soon began to relax a little. His thoughts turned to the two humans and the horse. Something needed to be done, and quickly. The warrior was in a desperate state, and they all greatly needed rest and food. He had the berries in his pouch, along with a day or two's worth of hard tack left over. Luckily, they were able to collect water at the stream, so his waterskin was full, but how long it would last for three and a horse, he could only guess...but he knew it wasn't long.

At Neko's offer of gratitude, Eosan shrugged his shoulders sheepishly. "There is no need of thanks, little one. I did what I felt was right." He looked over at the wounded man lying by the entrance. "He needs healing, and quickly. I have a spell that might clean his wounds - although I've never used it in such a way. After that, clean bandages and warmth. But I'm afraid that's all I can do."

"I'm... okay..." Neko said softly, not taking much heed to her own wounds. As long as Kratos was still alive and strong, she would always be okay, but now he may die on her. She couldn't live without him, she had tried and almost died at sea. She needed her brother to keep her from doing stupid things. She needed someone to watch over her always.

When Eosan spoke to her about healing him, her heart leapt in joy.

"Thank you!" Neko choked, tears coming to her eyes. Kratos would be okay. She pressed her own forehead to Kratos' feverish one and cradled him gently.

Adonis looked up at Eosan, suspicion tipping his ears backward. He had not forgotten the damage the elf had taken after his last spell. "This magic...is it safe for you?" he asked. Healing sounded like a great idea, but most great ideas came with a price.

Eosan looks toward the talking horse. "It is not exactly healing, in the purest sense - like I said before, true healing is beyond my power. But I can clean the wounds - at the very least, it will prevent the spread of infection, and hopefully buy us the time we need to get him to a true healer. As to it's safety, rest assured this spell is little more than a cantrip, and will effect me very little. Sometimes it is not the power of a spell, but how you use it that matters most."

He places his hands over the warrior's worst injuries. He takes a deep breath and closes his eyes. When he opens them again, they glow a bright red. As if cool, clear water runs from his hands, dirt and debris run from the wounds, eventually leaving behind clean, pink flesh. The wound, though not healed, was at least in a state where it could safely begin healing on it's own.

Eosan reaches into his pack and pulls out a clean linen shirt and hands it to Neko. "Here - tear this into strips about a hand's span wide. We'll bind his wounds to keep them as protected as we can."

He wished he could do more, but it was up to the young man now. He hoped his spirit was strong enough to keep him alive, because he feared his body was not.

Neko accepted the clean linen and began to tear it into strips, all the while elated that now her brother would heal cleanly. He'll make it! She thought happily as she bound his healing wounds. When she finished she stroked her brother's face lovingly and hoped he'd awaken soon.

"How long should we stay here?" Her question was directed towards the dark horse.

Adonis rolled his eyes, which didn't have much effect in his current form. "Until he is mobile again," he said shortly. Was he really going to stay in this cave with these humans for a period of several days? "We can defend this cave. If they find us, we'll fight back." It was his human experience thinking for him. His unicorn instincts would have told him to flee, and take all possible precaution against violence. He tucked his ears back and rested his head against the cave wall, wondering what happened to Telanis. He would know it if his brother died....probably. He couldn't be sure. No, Telanis had to be alive. But as for where, that was a new and complicated question.

"He's right," Eosan said, nodding toward the horse. "We can stay a day, maybe two, but eventually anyone following us will find this cave. We need to keep moving. With any luck, we'll be able to avoid these pursuers if we move quickly and stay out of sight. I think, however, our first priority is to build a litter to carry our friend here quickly and safely. With it, we will be able to move faster than before, but still allow him to rest."

Adonis raised his head to Eosan, ears perked, as if really looking at him for the first time. A human that could actually think. How novel. "Perhaps something I could drag...if you know how to make it." He certainly had no idea how to build such a thing, but the idea appealed to him.

"Would it be safe?" Neko asked, concerned for her brother's health. She stood up and looked earnestly at Eosan. "Could you make it strong? I can help if you show me--I just want it strong..."

"Well, I've never built one, but in theory it shouldn't be that hard." He frowned in thought. "We'd need two long, sturdy tree branches - about seven or eight feet long. Also, maybe six or so smaller branches - about two feet in length each. The most difficult part will be lashing the branches together. Unless one of you has some rope, we'll need to find a suitable replacement. Did anyone see any vines outside? Even thin weed or plant stalks will do. And we'll have to find a way to attach the litter to our friend, here," He gestured toward Adonis.

"All right. Little one, I'll need your help gathering the wood and bindings. I think it best that our equine friend stay behind and keep watch - I don't think he's best suited for this task. Stay with me at all times. We don't need to risk being separated now, especially with the possibility of more guardsmen around."

He chuckled. "You know, eventually I'll have to learn your names. Mine is Eosan."

Neko listened to everything Eosan would need, happy that she could help instead of being completely useless.

"You know, eventually I'll have to learn your names. Mine is Eosan."

Neko perked up saying, "I am Neko. This is my brother... Kratos." she gestured to the injured man lying on the ground, who groaned in response. She jumped thinking maybe that he was coming back, but no, he was only dreaming. Her smile fell, but she did not give up hope.

"Hello, Neko," Eosan smiled warmly. "Glad to meet you. Now let's get to work."

He stepped back out into the relative openness of the forest. "Here," he said, handing Neko a short dagger from his belt. "Use this to cut some plant stems - the longer and whippier, the better. I'll see if I can find some good-sized branches for our litter. Make sure you always keep me within view. If you lose sight of me, just stay where you are. Don't call my name. I'll find you."

Neko nodded, doing what she was told. She was clumsy with the knife but she managed. Her determination to protect and heal her brother gave her the drive to keep going. He would live! He must. She felt he would, deep inside her heart. While cutting more plant stems, an odd thought came to her mind unexpectedly. 'Adonis can help us.' Wait, how could Adonis help? He wasn't even around... Now that she thought about it, Neko had no idea where he had gone. 'No, I remember, he was here? Wasn't he?'

"I know I called your name..." she whispered to herself then jerked her head up. Blinking in realization, she found that she had lost Eosan. "Awe man! Es-!!" She stopped, remembering not to call out his name. Her thoughts of Adonis vanished as quickly as they had come. She tried to keep cutting plant stems without panicking over whether or not Eosan would find her.

Working quickly, Eosan crept through the brush, collecting a good armful of branches. He narrowly avoided a large patch of poison ivy, nearly broke his ankle stepping into a sudden depression, and successfully fought off a thoroughly upset mother opossum, but in time, he managed to get enough wood for the cross-braces he needed.

"All right, Neko," he said, turning, "We should head back - "

But Neko wasn't there.

Damn you, girl, he thought tiredly. He turned in place, trying to catch a glimpse of the missing child. She was nowhere he could see, and it was getting dark. Okay...let's find her. Bring the pain...

He closed his eyes and concentrated. He hated doing this, because spells that required prolonged concentration were exceedingly hard to control when it felt like someone was stabbing you in the gut with a thousand needles.

After a few moments, he opened his eyes. Everything was soft shades of blue and green, except for little spots of bright red and yellow here and there on the ground, in the trees....little creatures, birds....over there was probably his opossum enemy...he looked farther out.

There.

Just within his range of vision, he could see a huddled form, larger than the rest, just visible through a mass of brush. Yes, he could see her standing now. Eosan let out a slow sigh of relief. He began walking towards her. Fool girl. Did I not ask her to -

Suddenly, as he neared her, he caught a glimpse of another form in the underbrush. Not human this time, but definitely bigger than the rest of the creatures. He couldn't make out what it was. There! Another. And another...

Then he heard the howl.

Eason broke into a desperate run. "Neko! Wolves!!"

Her head snapped up at his warning. Terrified, and not wasting time looking around, she bolted back to the cave where the horse was waiting with Kratos. She was still clutching the stems as she ran. Sher heard a growl and snarl from behind her and she screamed, trying to run faster but she couldn't. Her injuries, her fatigue, it was slowing her down. She was running out of breath faster than normal for her, and her legs were spasming in protest.

when she had the cave in sight, she called out, "Wolves! Adonis! Wolves!" Again, she called out the name of someone who couldn't have been anywhere near them. That man was gone, either dead or separated from them for the longest time. Just like Laya and Telanis. Where were they? She bolted into the cave entrance, tossing her pile of plant stems to the side and grabbed at her brother. She disparately tried to drag him further into the cave, away from danger. She hoped Eosan was alright.

"Eosan!" The wolf who chased her now stood before them, closer to the horse and staring them down. Assessing its prey before its attack. If she had a weapon, she could fight back. But, that sword she had had... it was gone.
