Soran grimaced at what Mizuki was putting herself through. He put his arm around her shoulder and pulled her in against his chest, his nose touching the soft hair on the top of her head. "Don't force it," he said in a whisper, not wanting to see her do something to herself like what had happened in the camp, or worse.

Sinead watched with a small frown. "What's happening?"

"Queen Sinead of Ighten, please don't make her do this. I will leave peacefully. These girls have done nothing wrong," Soran said with barely restrained urgency. It felt like his chest would collapse if his heart beat any faster. What the hell had he gotten them into?

"I can't do it..." She whispered, barely heard if Soran wasn't so near. "I can't open it." Now she remembered that she had locked and hidden her powers well away. She had done it too well, she couldn't summon her powers back now. They may be gone forever.

Rai looked at her father and shook her head. "No, daddy! Don't leave me!" she yelled, pulling back and forth on his pants. Her eyes were watery and pleading and she wanted nothing more than to be held by her father.

Rai looked at the Queen, looking like nothing more than a heartbroken child. She broke away from Soran and ran towards the Queen, suddenly tugging on her dress now. "Please, leave them all alone... Please?" Rai was crying now. She didn't want to lose these parents to a queen like she had lost her... She had had parents before Soran and Mizuki? Suddenly she remembered, and this made her cry harder. "Please...."

Sinead pressed a long finger to her forehead, thinking. Mizuki's reaction was too realistic to be fudged - she was inclined to believe the girl really was a seer. Once before, she had witnessed another seer with a similar problem summoning powers.

"Soran, is it? Your family seems to care greatly for you. I do not intend to choose your fate lightly. I will give the seer some time to rediscover her abilities, and postpone your sentence. You will remain inside the palace walls and be escorted by guards at all times. I will treat you as my guests until a decision can be reached."

"What of the other soldier, my Queen?" asked one of the guards, all of whom were memorizing Sinead's every word.

"Keep him in the dungeon until my decision is made," Sinead said, and waved her hand.

Guards rushed up from the sides of the room. "We will escort you to your quarters," one reported stalely.

Rai was sitting on the floor in front of Sinead's feet, her head hung wearily. She wasn't crying entirely because of her memories... She was also very weak from traveling, not sleeping or resting much. She was like most children when they were tired. She also had thought for a moment that her father was about to be killed too.

She didn't like the Queen, she wanted to kill everyone. Were all Queen's like this?

Rai sniffled softly, glancing from the queen to the floor.

Mizuki was pressing the heels of her palms to her temples, allowing herself to be escorted out without saying a word. What had she done? She knew they did right by telling the Queen what had transpired but what of everything else? Her head was reeling, on top of her guilt over Sid she had no way of tapping into her power again. It may be lost permenatly if she couldn't get into it. But it was impossible to lose what one was born with, wasn't it? She was causing herself a headache trying to make clarity of her clashing thoughts.

---

Over the skies of the Ashgrown forest from whence the haggard survivors of Hepian had come. A young, black winged boy flew into the nearest town causing a fearful havoc among the people.

"I'm trying to find someone," he said in his cheery voice, making those afraid stop and stare. "My mother." His smile was dissarming as his green eyes danced at the prospect of finding his mother who had to send him away against her greatest desires to keep him. It was a woman who approached, who had recongized something in the boy, she didn't know what she was seeing, but there was a comforting demeanor about the boy and a familiar face...

"What is her name?" the woman asked, coming from the crowd to crouch front of the boy.

"Mizuki Ryoko. She's a half elf, with brown hair-lighter than mine- and brown eyes. I have a daddy too! His name is Soran Nightblade, and my hair is dark like his and I have his eyes!" he was so excited to see the recognition in the woman's eyes. It meant she knew who he spoke of.

"They've gone to the palace, Lowlight." she said with a smile. 'There's another child to them,' she thought, noting the wings but she knew in her heart that this child was Mizuki's.

"Thanks!" and like that, the boy took to the air again, smiling brightly in anticipation.

Meanwhile, back at the infirmary...

"I have it covered," Vlad smirked at the doctors in affirmation of Tenele's words. Holding the maiden casually in his arms, he kicked open the door and began trotting down the corridors with his cargo. "Well, maiden girl, will it be your place or mine?" he joked sadistically.

Soran didn't say a word as he and the others were led out into the maze of hallways again. It was a tense and hostile atmosphere. Of their group, Rai was the only not heavily guarded as they climbed a long flight of stairs and finally arrived at a closed wooden door.

One of the guards opened it with a key, and then handed the key to Soran. "You may travel at will on this level only. Do not approach the ground floor without an escort. There is a kitchen and dining room at the southeast corner that will provide you with food."

Soran nodded their understanding, and they entered the chamber. It was a large room, with a washroom in one corner and a doorway that led to two smaller bedrooms. The main room was furnished with curtains and silk rugs and had several comfortable chairs set out. The place was hardly a cell, but to a certain elf it felt like one.

Soran closed the door behind them, and then leaned back against it heavily. His cold expression dissipated into shock and he barely stopped himself from sliding down to the floor. What had he done? He'd never made such stupid mistakes in his life.

Tenele smiled as she draped one arm casually around his neck, pulling her face closer to his. "I have no idea where my place is located at the moment, unless you meant my old one. However, everything there is cinders... Guess we'll have to wonder about for hours trying to find mine since our guide hasn't followed. Gods, my Queen would stroke if she found me in your quarters...." Tenele laughed softly, thinking of the expression Sinead would have, though when she remembered how she and Vlad were forbidden to be together her smile left her.

"I don't understand why she loaths the idea of us being close," she mused to herself, brushing her other hand lightly against Vlad's pale cheek.

Rai looked around the room. "Daddy... I thought we were in trouble... This doesn't look like a place you would put people who were in trouble!" She smiled at her father and grabbed his hand, looking up at him with her bright eyes, which were still a little red from her sobbing.

Soran messed up Rai's hair with his hand and let out a nervous breath. "We may still be in trouble, but I won't let anyone hurt you. We'll see what happens tomorrow," he said to her, looking over at Mizuki.

One look at her revived his guilt. This was far too much pressure to put on her. They didn't even fully understand the risks of calling on her power. Sure, she'd had visions before, but he couldn't remember her showing them to someone else. Was that difficult? She'd been wiped out completely when she transmitted just emotions to the Hepian survivors. What would a complete image do? What could he possibly say to her? "Don't worry if you can't do it" hardly seemed to help, since the consequence would be his own execution. Everyone was worried because of him.

"There's no sense staying in here all day. This is a palace, after all. Shall we go have a look around?" he suggested, trying for his life to sound positive. "Rai, are you brave enough to explore this place? There could be traps," he chided.

"Well I'd sure hate to make the good queen mad," Vlad mocked, though he knew he had very little power to disobey her. He would decide how to deal with that later; for now, he was going to take advantage of the situation. "Well since we're on the housing level, would you care for a bite?" he said, flashing fang for the double meaning as he began swooping her off toward the kitchen without waiting for her response. He was having quite a ball carting her around.

Rai jumped and stood before her father with her hands on her hips and a determined look on her face. She smiled at him and the smile was a happy one. "I'm not scared of nothin'!" she told him, giggling as she ran and took hold of his hand once again. "Lets go!"

* * *

Tenele smiled. "I guess it depends on what or who is doing the biting..." she laughed, but they had already arrived in the dinning room. Tenele was still dressed in nothing but a robe, which was tied securely around her waist, on side of the robe drabbed over Vlad's hand revealing a long slender lightly tanned leg, though nothing immodest since it only revealed from her toes to just above her knee. Her long silver hair cascaded over her shoulders and down her back. She had not a stitch of make-up on, though her skin glowed with healthy light.

"I remember when you bit me once, because I was far to curious for my own good... so you showed me..." She looked down at her small slender wrist, revealing the two dots where his teeth had punctured her flesh. It hadn't hurt, and she had been surprised at how good it had felt.

Mizuki waved her hand dissmissivly at Soran. Not to be rude or angry at him, just because she was trying to get out words that just weren't coming.

"Go on without me," she said finally, her tone of voice soft but weary, "My head is killing me." She gave Soran a weak smile and a kiss on his cheek.

Soran nodded at Mizuki's words. Part of him wanted to stay there with her, but he couldn't sit still. "We'll be back soon," he said encouragingly, though the effort showed in his voice. "Here we go, Rai," he said, opening the door.

* * *

Vlad's pulse jumped at the memory of biting Tenele's wrist. "Lead me not into temptation," he said huskily, flicking his tongue playfully against her neck before easing her down into a chair. Shaking off the strange arousal, he swung around toward where a chef was preparing various foods behind a counter.

The chef crossed his arms as he spotted Vlad approaching. "I'm not giving you any flour. I wound up paying for that mess you made last time in Sir Edward's chambers."

"Not flour, I'm here for food, my good man," Vlad scoffed.

The chef leaned over and looked at Tenele sitting at one of the tables. "There's chicken or fish," he called warily so she could hear him.

When they left Mizuki was grateful for the time alone. She made use of the washroom; cleaning the grim of travel from her body and her clothes, but the lack of anything else to wear left her draping one of the bed linens about her. She didn't mind. She stared out the small window looking down on a large vegetable garden. Her peace gave her no reprieve from her thoughts, so instead of trying she collapsed in an exhausted heap onto one of the beds and found herself falling into a deep sleep. A sleep occupied by dreams of black feathers...

Tenele shivered when his tongue brushed against her. For some reason the thought of fish immediately made her sick. "Oh, chicken," she said, placing a hand upon her flat stomach. When the chef had taken her order she looked back up at Vlad and with a rather seducing smile said, "You know, Lord Dracul, they say the only way to get rid of temptation is to give in to it." Her smile then faded into one that was merely playful and she laughed softly, her cheeks flushing. Oh how she longed for him to give into that temptation.

The chef sent a woman out from behind the counter and placed the hot plate before the weakened Queen's Maiden. Though, Tenele looked very healthy, she felt to tired to move any extermity.

* * *

Rai giggled and ran out into the hall for a moment, turning back to look at her father. "Mmm! Something smells so good!" She said, the sent of fresh cooked food floating down the hall.

Vlad smirked and leaned back in his chair, his legs spread in an oddly provocative way. "Now where have I heard that before?" he said, and took on an interested grin. "You certainly have the energy to be playful."

Soran looked down the hallway where the smell was coming from. He had to admit that even he was famished. Maybe the situation would be easier to handle if they ate. "You're right. Let's go find out what it is," he said to Rai.
