Lore: Behind Stone Walls

It's home to many monasteries of the martial arts. Amidst the tall and welcoming trees there can be found statues of heroes and saints....

"I trust you Telanis," she said, wondering why he had to reassure her to trust him. Didn't he know she already trusted him with her life. She jumped onto his back. Her light form weighing no more than 115 pounds. She had lost a considerable about a weight since being captured by Kron and had not had time to gain it back.

She glanced behind them as she wrapped her arms losely around Telanis's neck so not to choke him. "I'm ready!" she said as soon as she was on his back securely.

Telanis tripped and barely kept his footing as he accepted her weight. It wasn't so much a matter of strength as agility...his human balance wasn't terrific. "Don't let go," he whispered, hoping this would work. He threw his arms out in front of him and released every ounce of magic he sensed in his body to change to his natural form. Changing was not so bad....changing while running was a trick he had never attempted. Blinding light surrounded them both, and a strange power surged through Laya that was somewhere in between glowing light and sharp pain. Telanis's form changed beneath her and she was suddenly riding a tall unicorn.

Telanis stumbled desperately, trying not to crash as he made the transition from two to four all at once. The wall was racing up in front of them. He had to just jump and trust their luck. His limber form drew taut and then exploded upward, leaping over the wall. The landing was less graceful as Telanis twisted his ankle and staggered unsteadily before racing away into the trees to escape the hail of arrows that followed them. They were safe for now, but he didn't stop running, racing dizzily between the trees as if a dragon was on their tail.

Laya took in a sharp breath as the light blinded her and she felt a sharp pain hit all the nerves in her body at once, though it was over in a moment she didn't quite understand what it was from.

She finally started breathing normally as they raced through the forest. She held Telanis's mane, trying to stay on his back as he galloped and jumped through the forest.

"I think we're safe now," she said. "You can rest Telanis..."

Telanis's legs were burning, and though he wasn't sure if they were really safe, he let himself take Laya's advice. He slowed reluctantly to a lope that favored his injured ankle, and finally slowed to a shaky trot, his skin steaming hot under his crystal-white fur. "Are you hurt?" his mental voice sounded exhausted as it entered gently into her mind.

Laya slid of his back to walk next to him so he wouldn't be bothered by her weight. "I'm fine, I think..." she said and glanced at him quickly. "Are you hurt?" she asked him, looking him over to make sure no arrows had hit on there escape.

"Telanis... what about your brother?" she said, glancing back in the direction they had come. "Do you think he will be alright?"

Telanis stretched his neck back toward the direction of the village longingly. "I don't know," he said. "If they're safe, they will find a way to get out. If they're not, we'll only put ourselves in the same position by going in again." He sounded like he hated the sound of his own voice. He looked back at her as if searching for forgiveness. "I...I can't fight, Laya... If I go in, I'll get us both killed."

"I understand, Telanis..." she said and leaned against a tree tiredly. "Besides what would happen to us would be far worst than death..." She said and slipped down into a sitting position. "Do you want to stay in that form or change.... Oh... we didn't pick your clothes up..." she said and thought for a moment. "Maybe you should wait before changing?"

She brushed her brown hair from her face, her stormy gray eyes looking at him as a soft smile came to her lips. "Lets rest, Telanis..."

Telanis looked absently at his slightly sore ankle, lost in thought. "I will stay in this form," he agreed. It felt so good to be himself again...he just wished he didn't feel so guilty for it.

"Let's rest," Laya invited him. Her voice was so gentle that Telanis was surprised to feel himself relax automatically, even if only a little. A soft glow of pleasure finally radiated from his deep brown eyes. The others would be okay...they had to be. He would know if his brother were dead, and Adonis wouldn't leave them... he hoped. He could only keep this one safe...it was the best he could do.

He stepped toward her slowly and arched his elegant neck over her shoulder, his chin laying across her back. It was the same hug he'd given her when he first met her, and it filled him with a sense that he was doing the right thing, the only thing he was able to do. He couldn't hear anyone approaching from the direction of the city, yet. "Rest sounds good."

She leaned her cheek in against him, closing her eyes gently as she rested, taking in slow deep breaths. She sighed at how calm and safe she felt all the sudden.

She sighed again before speaking softly. "Maybe they'll stop looking for us? Maybe they've already found something that catches there interest more. If not... I won't let anything happen to you Telanis... I care for you very much... and would hate to see you hurt..."

Caught and captured, Neko and Kratos were beaten and bruised, their mother slain right before their eyes and they were now being dragged off to an encampment where they would be tortured and killed. Neko was barely conscious; she was bound, gagged, her clothing ripped and torn and bruises and burns all over her body. A soldier had her thrown over his shoulder and he cruelly fondled her for his own enjoyment while she was out cold.

Kratos instead, struggled in vain against his bonds, tears stinging his eyes as they dragged his mangled body, a roped lead tied to the saddle of a horse, and dragged him the distance to the camp. His arms felt dead from being raised over his head, the binds on his wrists digging into his skin and pulling his arms forever upwards. The memory of his mother being ruthlessly killed right in front of Neko and himself was branded in his mind.

Laya... Telanis... Adonis... don't come back here... he prayed. They were already dead.

Telanis only barely felt the ominous instinct that would have alerted him to someone suffering nearby. Unfortunately, he and Laya were far away, and in an entirely different direction from the camp Neko and Kratos were being hauled off to. He raised his head up from Laya's shoulder worriedly. The feeling was too faint to even sense the direction of its source. Was that Neko and Kratos?

Adonis's head slowly raised up as he sensed the intense suffering of someone very closeby. He looked over his black coat that was showered with ash from the barn he'd barely managed to escape from. Stupid humans...always drawing him into their garbage. Now he'd completely lost track of his brother. He knew very well Telanis was still alive. If anything had killed his brother, he would know instantly. And since they hadn't, whoever was suffering was not with his brother right now, or they wouldn't be suffering. Therefore, it made sense that the one direction he had absolutely NO interest in proceeding toward right now was the direction of Neko and Kratos's predicament. In fact, he decided to go in the exact opposite direction.

But half a minute later, he still hadn't moved. He knew who it was. A slender hand reaching out to offer him carrots like he was some kind of livestock. A soft mouth that talked to him as though even livestock could somehow understand speech and human emotions. Naive, and foolish. And in incredible pain. Adonis tossed his head in an agitated gesture, shaking ash from his ebon mane. What was he hesitating for?

Laya sighed softly as she rested her cheek against Telanis's silky coat. "You are very soft," she said, grinning as she gently stroked his neck. "I wish my hair was this soft!" She was trying to cheer him up by making idle conversation, though she was very unsure if she could cheer him up.

"AAUUURRRRGG!" Neko's scream as her hair was yanked to pull her head far back. Hands tied behind her back, a blindfold around her head, and her battered body bared for the world to see... being violated. She felt herself being ripped apart; the only mercy was from the cool breeze on her feverish skin. Everything was dark, the blindfold giving nothing away, but she knew what was happening, and she cried.

Kratos knew what was happening as well. He himself was blindfolded but he recognized his sister's dreadful screams. He ignored his own pain of being tied to a large crucifix, the stinging of blood rushing back to his lifeless arms but unable to make it to his tightly bound hands made him desire death. It was only the beginning for him. Though now, the soldiers and their liutenant were giving him his 'break', but still used his sisters continuing agony to make him talk.

"God damnit! I know nothing more! I swear!" he cried, struggling against his binds.

"The more you give that answer the more she suffers! Now tell us what you know!" a crack of a whip from the liutenant emphasized his growing impaitence with Kratos' answers.

"I swear we only know of your plans for Onegoreth, nothing more!"

"Did you give word to anyone? Send out a message?"

"No!" Kratos cried more, "Please... stop hurting her... I'll do anything..."

"Then you'll die as an example to those who would turn traitor against the War Lord and our Queen Shea!"

Kratos hung his head in defeat, knowing that soon Neko would follow him to the Land of Shadows...

Adonis finally decided he was sick of his indecision. If the choice was going to be such a hassle, he may as well go and see what was happening to the human first. He could find Telanis later. Maybe seeing what was going on would alieve his curiosity a nd he could get on with things. He broke out of the bushes at a swift trot, his light form making quiet tracks on the leafy ground as he navigated the trees straight toward Neko and Kratos's location. Some habits died hard.

The first people he saw were a couple of lookouts positioned at the edge of the camp beside a pair of supply tents. Adonis rolled his eyes impatiently; this wasn't what he came to see, but he could feel that they were in here somewhere. An idea came to him.

"Hey, guards," his mental voice entered both men's heads, though it didn't give them any sense of which direction it was sent from. "No, this way," he said again as the guards looked toward him. They both glanced the opposite way, seeming unsettled. "I'm right in front of you, but you're too stupid to even see me, or my 20 friends approaching from the other side of your camp," Adonis sneered into their heads.

The men glanced at each other angrily, then took off in alarm toward the other side of the camp, howling for the other guards to follow them.

Adonis snorted and paced cautiously into the abandoned group of tents. He had to make this fast.

The quick distraction and sudden hurry made the liutenant crack his whip upon Kratos' skin.

"Friend's to help you escape?!" He snapped angrily, "Not in my camp. Men, take care of the pesky insects and let nothing get in or out!" He stalked off with his whip in hand, none knew where he was going but the soldiers guessed that he was letting them take care of everything... as usual. Seeing that Kratos was tied down and beaten to the point where even if he was freed he couldn't escape, and Neko was too broken and in sorrow for herself to even see what was going on, the soldiers that had been in attendance to the two's torture dispersed to see to the problem.

Kratos and Neko were left to themselves, Neko's broken weeping an angst filled lullaby to Kratos' already hopeless soul.
