Laya gripped Adonis's mane tighter as she thought about Telanis being alone on the ship... a burning ship... Or in the water... He couldn't swim. Laya cried out as if Kron was draging her from Adonis's back. Then she faded into horrified sobs. "Gods no..." She cried, it was a horrible agonizing feeling. She loved Telanis... The thought of him being dead because of her... Because they had told him he needed to leave.
"You take my family from me, you give me to Kron... now you take him away from me... I hate you, gods... I hate you...." She sobbed uncontrollably. She hated crying... But, now days she couldn't stop crying.

Adonis fell silent as Laya began crying, her anguish and regret pulsing through him. He now regretted what he'd just said to her, but it was too late to take it back. Maybe he really was what she said he was. But if he could save his brother from the same fate, it would be worth it. If he was alive...
~It's not your fault,~ he told her quietly. ~Shhh, he may be alive yet. You're still weak; try to rest.~ He almost didn't recognize his own voice. He hadn't spoken so gently to someone in many years.

She didn't care if she was weak. With out Telanis there was nothing in her world. She had no light... Her heart felt as if it were ripped from her chest. She hadn't realized that she had fallen in love with him... Maybe it wasn't love love... She had never felt love before so she didn't know what it could feel like.
Adonis's voice surprisingly calmed her. She felt sick though, like she had to throw up. She rested against Adonis's back, tears streaming down her cheeks. She hiccuped now and then.
Telanis... please answer me... Oh please! I need you...

...Telanis... please answer me... Oh please! I need you...
But Telanis could not hear, his mind too swollen with the agony of the dying passengers and crew to pick out anything so subtle as a spoken message. He paddled with his human hands through the cool salt water, not realizing that he'd slouched forward and unconsciously begun to rest his head on Neko's back. He wasn't aware of much at the moment, just sending his body through the necessary motions and praying that somehow Laya and Adonis, and any others, would manage to survive. He'd never been surrounded by so much death before.
Adonis swam on in silence, allowing Laya to rest and vent as he fought the harsh waves that kept breaking over his slender neck. An hour later, it seemed like they were still only half way to shore. His breath had grown somewhat ragged, and his flesh was hot beneath Laya's hands despite the cold water surrounding them.

Adonis did what he could to subconsciously alleviate Laya's sorrow. He was upset himself, but though he didn't realize it, his protective instincts were still numbing out his own emotions in their natural urge to calm the one suffering alongside him. He was just built that way, whether he wanted to help humans or not.
"I don't hear him," Laya cried.
~Nor do I, he confirmed softly, his voice little more than a whisper. Most of his concentration was in keeping his legs moving. He doubted he would be able to sense Telanis amidst his adrenaline and exhaustion anyway, so the fact that he'd not heard from his brother meant little as far as whether he was alive. And that same problem was probably facing Telanis. ~He may not be able to answer you right now, even if he would like to,~ he told her. ~Many must have died on that ship. He's probably overwhelmed by their emotions, and his mind has gone into lockdown. The only emotion that might get through to him now is one of joy or pleasure. Something that would stick out from the torrent of suffering.~

Laya rested her salt filled eyes. Her hands were getting prunny, and the salt was feeling her burns. For now it was numbed, but a soon as she was out of the water it would hurt a lot.
"Joy or pleasure?" she asked him, though she already knew the answer. "What could I possibly do to make that feeling strong enough?

Adonis thought. Should he try to help her? He knew he couldn't muster a sense of joy in this scenario, but perhaps she could?
~I haven't mentioned this yet, but I am Telanis's brother,~ he told her. ~And believe it or not, he was always the practical one. I was the one with my head in the clouds, acting on the first whim passion moved me toward. He used to always reprimand me.
Well, there was once a band of gypsies traveling through the forest. Telanis always told me to keep my distance from travelers unless I was needed, but these gympsies had musical instruments with them, and were making a racket off by the trail. The one flaw in Telanis's rational personality is that he's absurdly curious. So without admitting it to me, of course, he snuck off to investigate. When he got there, he walked right up to them, and they were too drunk to care much. They just kept playing. Then when he went to investigate one of their instruments, he got his horn stuck in a drum, and spooked so bad he ran through some paints they'd been using to color their faces. When I finally got him to stop running he looked like a paint wheel crashed into a concert hall.~ There was a faint smirk behind his words. Maybe it was relaxing him a bit despite himself to talk about these things.

Despite herself Laya grinned at the cute image of Telanis covered in paint. "Poor thing," she mused. "He is very curious!" Laya smiled again. "He's always poking his head into cupboards in other peoples houses... And he has the cutest expression when he's being curious..."
Laya smiled at the image of his face.
"I tried to teach him to run in his human form..." she chuckled slightly. "He was so set on running faster than me... I let him, he wasn't used to being human... Poor thing, I had to help him put his clothes on!"

Adonis had to snort at the image of his brother being too clumsy to get his clothes on. ~That doesn't surprise me. The first time he tried using his human form, it was to help a man who'd sprained his leg in the middle of the woods. Except the guy was apparently terrified of horses, and even brother's charm wasn't getting around that. Only problem was, his human form seemed to scare him more. Maybe because he wasn't used to beautiful nude men approaching him in the forest, or maybe because he wasn't used to them stumbling and falling directly on top of him.~

Laya actually laughed... It was so odd for her because she rarely did it since Kron... But, the image of Telanis doing such a thing amused her.
"I don't know which one to feel sorry for more," she confided in Adonis. "He's addicted to the carrots in stew." She grinned. "I blame myself for that one..."
Her heart filled with warmth, thinking of Telanis made her happy. After all, he was the only light in her dark world. Her heart grew light. "I think I love him Adonis... Really..." She smiled. She didn't care if she didn't understand... He made her happy. She wanted to make him happy. She loved him. "He's alive... We're going to find him!"

Adonis's amusement faltered for a second as Laya told him she loved Telanis. That threw him off a little, but the way she said it made him wonder if maybe it was true. ~Alright,~ he agreed tentatively, ~Then let's try it. Call out to him together, on three. Gently, or he'll jerk away. One, two, three.~ Letting his barriers open, he called out as calmingly as he could for his brother, seeking out his mind in the maze of pain and panic that lay behind them.

Somewhere a little under a mile away, Telanis's head lifted slightly. Gentle, familiar voices laced with happiness had just touched his mind, no stronger than a whisper. But the combination seemed so unlikely that he thought he might have imagined it.
~Bro...r....L..ya...I'm S.....ad t...at you a......fe! Wi....Neko.......os...~ his voice reached them haphazardly, barely strong enough to get through, but good enough to know he was safe.

Laya sighed in relief, resting her head down this time. She was so happy to hear his voice. She felt more calm than she had been when Adonis had pulled her from under the burning sail and jumped iwth her burning body into the dark salty ocean. She was still very tired though.
Her wet dress skirt was heavy and laying across the back of Adonis's back. She was tangled in her own skirt, but she really didn't need to move. She just hated the tangled feeling.
