(Lore) Recovering

The shores of Ighten are beautiful beaches with white sand, palm trees, shacks and houses with people that live along it. It's also an easy way for Arken people to enter Ighten, since it is more or less unguarded. Sometimes wrecked ships wash ashore.

They'd made it only a few hundred feet from the ship when muscled hands jumped out of the water and two men pulled down the side of their plank, almost dislodging Telanis at least. "Seems you've found a nice perch," the first man said breathlessly, his weight dragging the side of the board well underwater. "Care to hand it over? You all look like strong enough swimmers." There was no way the plank could support them all, and it didn't look like the desperate men were giving up without a fight.

Kratos didn't think like he normally would concerning people who he would normally try to save. These guys would gadly kill others to save their own skin, and as far as Kratos could tell, the world was better off without them.

Quickly punching the one man in the face, Kratos had Neko and Telanis keep paddling while he brawled dangerously in the water with the other man. The other man had no coordination in the water, much to Kratos' advantage, and he was subdued quickly. Kratos kicked away, swimming fast back to the plank while the other men were disoriented.

Telanis closed his eyes and kept paddling, trying not to think about the fate of the two men. He couldn't help it; his instincs told him to protect everyone, and no logic could completely butt that down. He hoped Kratos would be safe.

Kratos reached them again and grabbed onto the plank paddling feircly. He commanded them without words to get as far away from the two men as possible and just keep heading for the shore.

Telanis followed Kratos's silent instructions. Behind them, he felt the anger and desperation of the two men, along with many others, changing to pain, and then their signals faded entirely. He had to clench his jaw tightly to keep the emotion from his face. "Are either of you hurt?" he asked at length, because he couldn't really discern one psyche from another at the moment.

Laya wanted air so bad, but she was to far down to get it. Adonis's nude body was pressed against her, but that didn't both her. She was used to nude men being pressed against her. She sucked in air right as they were about to reach the surface and sucked water into her lungs. She started coughing uncontrollably and she held onto Adonis for dear life.

She wasn't ready to die...

No matter how much she wanted to she wasn't ready to die.

"Why do you keep saving me, if you want to kill me?" she asked between gasps, her arms hoding onto him as she weakly kicked her legs to try and help keep herself above the surface. His spell however had drained her of all energy. The only thing keeping her going was her subconcieous will to live.

Adonis gasped as he cleared the surface of the water and fought to keep Laya afloat with him, not liking his contact with her any more than she did. "Be quiet," he told her sharply, throwing his attention back into his spell. He could feel the stone resisting him as he drew more power from it, protesting the destruction of its own magic. The stone's built-in will wanted only to destroy; only Adonis's charisma and strong will were forcing it to do otherwise. A black cloud surrounded them, flowing into Laya like water and then out again, taking her curse with it. When it was done, Adonis was panting, worn out from the effort of manipulating the stone. He didn't bother to answer Laya's question about why he kept saving her. He didn't know the answer himself, now more than ever. "Probably," he breathed, "the same reason you saved me." He distanced himself a bit from her in the water. "I'm going to change back, if you think you can hold on this time," he said coldly.

Laya just stared at him as he spoke coldly to her. "You're a horrible, mean, sad creature..." she said, her gray eyes glaring at him.

"When we get to the island you never have to worry about cursing me again. I'm never going to see you... ever again." She kept her head above the water long enough for him to change back.

"Fine," Adonis shot back, not showing that he was actually a bit shocked by her words. In another blinding flood of light, he transformed again, a beautiful, sleek animal now struggling in the water next to her. ~Well?~ he prompted even though he knew she wasn't hesitating. He sort of just wanted her to say something.

Laya got on his back and laid across him, to keep the weight from being consentrated in one place. "Why do you hate me?" she asked softly, her voice sounded very hurt. She didn't understand it. Why would he save her if he hated her so much that he would curse her to a slow miserable death. "Why did you want me to hate Telanis? He's the onle goodness I see in this world. I could never hate him... I'd..." She shut her mouth. Why was she talking to his black unicorn.

Laya shivered. The air around her was cold since she was out of the water. She rested against Adonis, sighing wearily.

~Your humans are manipulative and cruel. You betray and abandon. You use our kind as stepping stones to heal and protect you on your journeys of destruction, and then throw us away when we're not needed. You care nothing for others; it's all a show. Sometimes you even believe your own lies, and think you are doing good for good's sake, but in the end it's only to serve yourselves. Telanis needs to learn that. You were the clearest method to do so,~ he said. It was odd how his presence was so soothing when his voice held such cold distrust.

She shook her head. "I'm not like that. I wouldn't do that... That's horrible... I know about being used for someone elses benefit. I had a man brutally r-rape me and hurt me because thats what he enjoyed. Then he enslaved me and continued to rape me. He taunted me and told me that one day I would give in... He hurt me so much... His companion didn't warn me... She pretended to love him. When I fell a sleep I was his... He used me... He used her. When he grew tired of her... he killed her. To him I was a possession. He began to treat me like a toy that he took special care of. I know what its like to be betrayed, abused... used... I could never do that to anyone else!"

She started tearing up. "If Telanis hadn't have been so kind to me I would have killed myself," she breathed. "I have nothing to live for but him. With out him... Without his trust and without being able to trust him... I'll die. I guess that's selfish? Maybe I shouldn't be near him. Aren't unicorns only supposed to be with pure people? Virgins?"

Adonis arched his neck enough to look back at her as he listened to her horrible story. He hadn't expected....hadn't even imagined she had been through so much. But what really stunned him was that it was almost the same as what happened to him. Abandoned by Erik and kept like a pet at his side, abused, forced to live through his sexual escapades, debauchery, his neglect, his drunken fights, sharing a psyche with him while he slowly contaminated every pure thought the unicorn had ever known. And then trying to sell him, to a mercenary squadron of all things, to turn him over to a life filled with violence and blood, when that was against everything Adonis was...

Laya hadn't been abused by someone she loved, but she had been abused far worse than he had. When he spoke again, the hard edge in his voice was dulled. That's a myth. Telanis has never turned away anyone who wished his help, regardless of who they are. Even if they ask him to leave his forest, one of the greatest possible sacrifices for our kind, he would do it without complaint.~ There was no accusation in his voice, but there was no doubt he was bringing it to her attention that Telanis should not have left.

"He wouldn't have to have left if it wasn't for you!!" Laya screamed angrily. "He had to live in fear for his life because of you! He could have died! He had to leave! Those townspeople would have murdered him because of the 'the curse of the unicorn.' I didn't want him to leave. I would have stayed there. Kratos and Neko thought it best for him to leave. And they have family in Ongoreth. I hated the thought of going back to Ongoreth. Its where Kron found me! I would have stayed and died for Telanis if I needed to." Her voice had turned soft, calm at the middle of her speach. It was true though.

~If he'd stayed a bit longer, he'd have come to his senses, and we would be able to purify the forest of the humans permanently. He was far better off there than here. How will he regain his energy? To bring a unicorn onto a boat....he can't even swim,~ Adonis's words had begun harshly, but the more he talked about Telanis, the softer his voice grew, anxiety finding its way into his tone. Could his brother be dead?
