Soran frowned and returned her embrace. "You have nothing to apologize for. Everything will be fine," he assured gently.
Marelda grimaced, clenching the arrow's note in her palm. She hoped Soran was planning to make the responsible choice, but it was hard for her to imagine that the rogue would willingly submit himself to the enemy for the sake of other people. Her head was too clouded by prejudice to understand the closeness of the group before her; it just seemed like two women and two children being manipulated.

Marelda coughed assertively from where she was standing and interrupted, "Well, if you have no more victimized children to submit to me, I will take my leave," she said in nervous disgust.
Soran turned toward her from where he was kneeling. "I'll pay you."
"It's fine; I consider this social work. And considering wherever your money was probably earned, chances are I don't want it," she replied sourly.
"Take it anyway," Soran said firmly, pulling a gold coin from his pocket and flipping it at her.
The woman raised her hand and caught the coin, looking at it thoughtfully. "Nightblade, if you feel any sense of moral duty, then-"
"I know," Soran interrupted calmly. "Go home."
Marelda sighed disapprovingly and left through the front door, tossing the crumpled note to Soran.
Soran caught the note and put it immediately into his pocket, then looked back at Rai and lifted her up. "How are you feeling, kid?" he asked her comfortingly as he eased her into his arms and stood up.

"I'll take her to bed," Soran said, glancing at Mizuki. He took Rai upstairs and set her into the bed, bringing the covers over her. He took a seat crosslegged next to her, facing the headboard. His hand found Rai's and held them at rest on top of her stomach. "I'm sorry this happened," he said earnestly.

She smiled softly at Soran, moving her head around until it was comfortably sunk down into the pillow. "Its okay, Soran," she told him. "Its the bad things, you don't have to be sorry. Its not your fault. But, I'm okay! See!" She said, lifting his hand up in a shakey way and wiggling them around for a moment before letting them rest where they were before.

Soran looked at Rai and felt himself grin, wondering how his face could make that shape with so little truth behind it. "So it seems," he agreed, pleased by that much at least.
"But," he said and paused, probing for words, "You were put in danger, and that's wrong. You deserve a better lifestyle, and someday we'll find it for you. But...you aren't alone. You should know that, at least. If something happened to one of us, the others would be there with you. This is your family, for as long as you'll tolerate it." Soran took an edgy breath, having no clue what he was trying to say.

Soran released Rai's hands, pulling the blanket up over them, and rested his hand on top of her head, messing her bangs up affectionately. Her words struck an uneasy chord in his mind, but he kept his thoughts to himself, letting Rai fall asleep with her happy mood.
When she was thoroughly at rest, he shifted quietly out of the bed and left the room to go back downstairs, walking back to where Mizuki and Siren were. "Rai's in bed. We should all be doing the same," he advised.

Soran dragged his fingers back through his hair to the nape of his neck, then dropped his arm tensely. "I have no idea who they are, or what they want. But they're powerful, and capable of much worse than what happened tonight," he said flatly. "If I go to them willingly, they'll stop hunting Rai and Mizuki, and you." His face was an unreadable frown.
Mizuki sat on her bed, Blade was in his crib sleeping now, she tried to calm herself down because she couldn't sleep. She was angry and wanted to kill Tensho and whoever followed him in this scheme to get Soran. She wanted to cry because she had to send Blade, her only son, away to be safe. And she wanted to just run away with Soran. She didn't want to fight anymore. Hadn't they finished all that back at the Border? What made it worse was that this is all happening right after Soran told her he loved her.
Mizuki tried hard not to scream and tear her hair out. Instead, she stripped herself of her clothes and changed into her nightgown. She tried to lay down to sleep, but it wasn't working. She just sat in her bed, glaring at the wall.
