Lore: Fugitives

This is the forest that covers most of Ighten in dense and thick trees. It is the oldest forest in Heirot, since most of the Forests in Arken have been destroyed. It is well known as a haunted forest where ghosts and demons reside. In the forest are many villages. The villagers will tell you tales of trees that eat people, gaint spiders, and dragon lairs.

Mizuki stared at Sid long and hard, saying not a word. Gods she wish she knew what was going on in his mind.

"Do you... even know what Soran's talking about?" She asked him seriously. "Have you... seen, that sorceress at all?" Now she was wondering if maybe Sid could give her any information at all about the undead magic user that was trying to track them down.

Soran's eyes darkened at the three men. "Arken," he growled, his blades forming along each arm as he walked closer to them. All his anger, and yes, fear, from earlier at the camp came back with a vengeance as he watched the soldier pull at Rai's hair. He stopped a few feet from the man holding Rai. "Free you hands, if you expect to live," he said, holding out his armblades. He met Rai's eyes seriously, his eyes warning her to get ready to run.

Sid looked at Mizuki cautiously. "Sorceress...Lady Reya?" he said, choosing his words very carefully. Did Mizuki know of Reya? What other sorceress would she mean? "She heads the division of military sorcery for Shea. You...know of her?" Sid mentally smacked himself. What if she wasn't supposed to know about that? Perfect, the one possible thing that could make Rhen hate him more, and here he was blabbing about it.

Rai reached for Soran, waving her fingers out towards him, wanting nothing more than to be beside him. She whimpred as she was jerked backwards again. "Oww.." she said, putting her hands behind her head to hold her hair.

"What? are you mad? There are three of us..." the drunk soldier fell face first into the dirt. "There are two of us and one of you! When we're done spilling your filthy Ighten blood will play a little game with your daughter... Or maybe you'd like to play too."

Soran's patience snapped. He rushed the soldier that was holding Rai, his blade going directly into the man's neck while his other arm scooped Rai out of his grip, cradling her against his side. A firm kick to the chest sent the sputtering man flying backwards into a gurgling heap. Without even looking, the rogue, took a half step back, held Rai into his body and threw a rapid spinning kick that connected with the other soldier's head behind him. He landed and spun toward his target to see how much more punishment the man needed.

Rai closed her eyes and herself tightly to Soran, hugging him with all the strength she had. She was panting, shaking because she had been so scared. She was holding his shirt so tight that her knuckles had turned white.

"Hey... what's all the commotion over there? Did you find Larry? He needs to get his alchoholic ass back to camp." a man's voice was saying in the distance. One could hear the rustle of brush as he grew closer.

"Reya...? We're done with that wretched woman!" Mizuki spat, anger flaring in her eyes again. But then she thought twice about it. What if Reya was actually an undead creature? But, she didn't have that kind of aura... is there even a way to mask that? Father she this thing was really powerful, Reya had been too. And Reya did have more motivation to go after them for Arken; she also knew of Mizuki's abilities. Could Reya really be after them again? She's an undead creature?

The thought made Mizuki's stomach churn. To think that Soran had at one point in time cared for something like Reya! But, he didn't know. It might even be possible with powerful magic to mask yourself in such a way. Without her powers, Mizuki couldn't know for sure. Reya seemed possible but she was also unlikely.

"No other magic user that you know of aiding your Queen?" She said Queen as if it were acid on her tongue.

Sid lowered his gaze, his expression growing frustrated. "I don't know what you're talking about....Why do you know Reya?" Sid was getting the feeling more and more that Rhen had sought everyone out but him from his old life.

Mizuki's anger at Reya blocked out her anger at Sid, causing her to act more friendly towards him.

"The woman attacked us. She said killing Soran was the only way to get rid of her own pain." She clenched her fists at her sides. "How does killing someone else make your own problems go away, anyway? If We hadn't gone there-" Mizuki was talking to herself more than she spoke to Sid, "-I would've lost him.. and Rai would've lost her...father." Again, her mind seemed to say to her. Rai's real father had died at Shea's hand, and they adopted her. It was almost as if the events before had never happened, and they had always been a family.

Soran delivered one more sharp blow to his most recent target's head, making sure he was good and out. He ignored the drunk and moved swiftly behind some brush, crouching with Rai in his arms. "Shh," he whispered to Rai, resting a hand protectively on her head and hoping she could keep quiet despite her fear. He listened closely to the approaching soldiers' movements, preparing to ambush.

Sid listened to Mizuki, trying not to flex against his bindings in her presence. "It seems a lot's happened I don't know about yet," he said, wondering about what had happened between Rhen and Reya, and what past lay behind this woman and their child. He stretched his ear down against his shoulder to get an itch, and then sat looked up again. His posture was slightly more relaxed now than before. "I truly...don't know, about your family. I wake up with an assignment in my box, and I do what it says. Although there was a lot of briefing on secrecy this time - procedures and protocols they normally don't reiterate. Still, it was nothing that doesn't already hold true in all our wipeout missions..." He met Mizuki's eyes.

Mizuki eyed him carefully before using purely her own gut instinct to tell herself that maybe he was being truthful. "So, they gave you no details?" she asked. Of course no one but those with higher statuses would get to know everything. It was the soldiers jobs to just take the orders and go, they weren't supposed to ask questions. Shea had this all planned out, it was just frustrating not knowing exactly how far the woman was going with her plans. Her objectives were obvious, complete take over of all of Heirot, and destroy any that would stand in her way. Shea knew about Mizuki, well, enough to know that she needed her out of the picture...

And then it hit Mizuki. Having magic users on her own side, they could easily identify those on Ighten's side. So then, all magic users and seers would be captured and/or killed. Seers especially for they could warn the Queen ahead of time. That means her mother might be captured, or worse...

The thought made Mizuki grimace. She had to hope Gwendolyn was alive, had to.

"Tell me something, if you know of course, would Shea want to capture seers on Sinead's side or just kill them?"

Sid thought a moment. He knew very little about seers, but he'd heard that they could communicate mentally through close links. That would make military communication as they know it utterly obselete. A message could travel across an entire country in a matter of minutes if the right network existed. Even without being much for strategy, it made sense to Sid. "Yeah, she would. But how would she even identify those people in the first place?"

"Other magic users I would have to assume." Mizuki explained, "Our time at Reya's place helped me learn that. There was an exceptionally magical girl under Reya's command... she was able to see my link to Soran."

Sid nodded blankly and scooted back so he could lean against the tree behind him. "You're one of these seer people, right?" he asked her. "What's going to happen from here? Can you see the future?" His voice was surprisingly sober.

Mizuki sat closer to him than she originally would have if she wasn't focused on something much larger. "Yes, well, I was able to. Currently though I've had to discontinue the use of my powers to keep us traveling at a low key level. There's apparently some extremely powerful sorceress, other than Reya, that sensed me and was tracking me down. In order to keep us safe, I have to not use my abilities until this is all over." She tore at some grass near her, thinking hard.

"Well, I don't really understand, but...Couldn't that be for the best?" Sid said after a moment, sitting up straighter. He seemed to have gotten his second wind, and the life came back into his voice. "Who wants to see the future anyway? The way I see it, you have a rare opportunity to just live by your own experiences, like others do. Seeing the future, knowing the truth - that's crazy stuff. Could you see this as a chance to be free of that burden, and live in the present?"
