(Lore) Hide and Seek

Airen waited on her and stepped out the door into the living room. He saw the old woman sitting by the fire, sipping on a cup of tea. Without saying any thing Airen took Elena by the hand and walked over to a couch across from the old woman.

" Have y'all got everything straightened out?" the old woman asked sweetly. It almost sounded eerie.

Airen glanced at Elena and smiled. "I believe everything's okay now."

The old woman smiled at them," That's good, that's good," her voice trailed off a little. "Will y'all be staying tonight?" Now speaking clearly to them again.

Airen wanted to stay but the old woman had already given them so much. " I believe we would like to stay. I'll be willing to pay you for everything that you have done. I have gold." He pulled out the satchel from his side pocket.

The old woman laughed a little but began coughing right after. " Are you alright?" Airen asked worriedly.

" I'm fine" she replied clearing her throat. " Would y'all like something to eat? I have some food sit out for y'all on the table." Airen turned towards the kitchen and saw a plate of meat and some bread l set out on the table. "And don't worry about paying me til the morning." she added.

"Thank you," Airen replied sincerely." We will never be able to fully repay you for your hospitality." He led Elena to the table and sat down. The meat was tender and the bread was still warm. It was actually the best they had eaten in a few weeks.

The old woman just stayed in her chair. She coughed a few more times and then began humming to herself.

Elena wasn't hungry at all, her appitite had been lost along with the memories of the words Gargon had spoken to her in the dream.

She decided to eat anyway though, but it wasn't that much. The main reason she did eat was because she didn't want to seem rude to the nice old woman.

She pushed her bowl forward when she was finished, it was only half gone.

"Are you feeling okay?" Airen asked Elena as she pushed her food away

Elena looked up with her violet eyes. "I'm fine," she said softly, playing with the napkin in her lap. Her blond hair was curlier than usual and her eyes a bit more watery and seem to shimmer like diamonds.
The dress she was wearing was one that Airen had given her and it was a light violet, that matched her eyes and made them stand out even more.

Airen was concerned but didn't push the matter. He finished his food and pushed his own plate away.

" Are you ready to go to bed, or did you have something else in mind?" he asked her smiling trying to loosen the mood a little.

Elena looked at him and smiled softly. "I am tired... you don't have to go to bed... but will you lay with me until I fall alseep?" she asked him.

She didn't think she would be able to fall a sleep unless she had his comforting presence near her.

Airen stood up and stretched. "I'm rather tired myself." He yawned. He stretched out his hand to her and asked " Shall we?"

The old lady was still sitting in her small chair humming, not even paying attention to Airen and Elena.

Elena nodded and smiled softly as she took his hand and stood up. She followed Airen into the room, pausing to close the door behind her so the old lady wouldn't be bothered by them.

The next morning when Airen awoke Elena had her head on his chest and arm over his stomach. He didn't want to wake her but tried to get out of bed. She stirred a little but didn't open her eyes. Airen put on his clse and walked into the den. The old woman was still in her chair but the fire had died down and she no longer held her tea cup. She did have a piece of paper in her hand though.

" Good morning!" Airen said to quietly to her not sure if she was awake or sleeping. She didn't respond so Airen walked over to see if she was sleeping or if she just didn't hear him. " Hello," he said a little louder, but still no answer.

As Airen got closer he noticed that the woman didn't seem to be breathing. He tapped her on the shoulder but still nothing. He took the paper from her hand and it read...

I have no family left that still lives and you have been very kind since I met you. I never knew why I never let go before until I met y'all yesterday. I noticed by the way y'all were fed and the close you wore that y'all have had a hard time in this dreadful world. If you wish to not stay here, please let this be a place that you will always be able to come back to. Please do not sale this place. It was built by my father and my husband and has stood for 43 years. Before you make your decision, don't just consider yourselves. Consider your unborn child. This is a great little village for kids to be raised in. I congratulate you on your child by the way. I am finally ready to leave this world and go....

Airen read the letter and tears began to stream his face. He looked at the old lady, took her hand in his, and whispered," Thank you!" He wasn't really sure what to do or how to react. He walked back to the room, letter in hand, and sat down with his back against the bed, unable to speak.

Elena had rolled over onto her back, but managed to work here way slightly out from under the covers. She didn't notice it of course, since she was sleeping.

Her stomach was as flat as could be, actually she was very thin. It didn't look at all as if she could possibly be with child. Her chest rose and fell with even breaths, and nothing seemed to bother her in her sleep.

Inside though she was dreaming of Airen... They were making love. But, it was strange because they were surrounded by fire. Miles and miles of fire...

Elena began to move around the bed, her head rolling from side to side slowly. Her arms sliding up next to her face as her body moved around.

"Airen..." she said, her voice no where near being frightened. Her voice almost purred.

In her dream she looked into Airen's eyes, not caring if fire was around them. What could fire do to hurt her if she was with him... His eyes fluttered and she wanted him to look at her. When they did open they were black and filled with sin.

Airen heard Elena moving around on the bed then he heard her purr his name. he turned around to her and said,"Elena?"

He watched her in her restlessness,"Elena?" He said again as a grin began to form on his face.

He crawled into the bed beside her and rubbed his hand gently over her flat stomach. He softly kissed her neck then whispered in her ear,"Elena, are you awake?"

Elena's eyes opened and she looked lat Airen for a moment, taking a deep breath and sighing. She stared up at him.

"Hey..." she said. Her bright violet eyes sparkled.

" Hey..." Airen replied. he smiled back at first but it quickly faded when he realized that he was still holding the letter written by the old woman.

He handed it to Elena,"Here! Read this."

Elena took the paper and sat up, pulling the sheets up to her bare chest. She read it quietly to herself and looked up at Airen.

"Is she dead?" Elena asked.

Airen felt the sorrow flooding back to him. " I'm afraid so..." he answered. " She has apparently left everything to us also." He could feel the tears wailing up inside him, but he fought them back. " All she had been was kind to us."
