Lore: Forgotten Enemies

The city closest to the border. It is a city filled with traveling people and inns that hold many of the roughest people in Ighten. It's a good place to find weapons and an even better place to find trouble.

Mizuki held her breath as Soran glared at her. What had she said? "Ah.. s-sorry." She looked away and turned her attention back to the blob in her hand. Her cut had ceased to bleed and now a scar was beging to form. She took a few steps away from him and got back on the path.

"Maybe... we should return... unless you've got other things to do..." she said softly with her back turned to him.

Rai giggled and ran from around the tree. "I will give you special magic!" Rai said and scooped up a handful of sand. She took his hand and put the sand in it. "There! Now you can beat her!"

Rai ran and put her back against the tree to watch the fight.

Soran's expression abruptly fixed itself as Mizuki spoke. If he said 'yes' now, they could conveniently return to the house, and nothing would pass between them. "I'm going to see something," he said, neutrally, "Will you come with me?"

Mizuki let out a small breath that she didn't realize she was holding. She turned back to him and smiled, nodding.

Relief and tension battled in Soran's mind as Mizuki agreed. He nodded and began walking in a different direction from home, then turned down an alley. He wasn't sure if she remembered it, but it was the place he used to frequent when he wanted to be away from people. They walked past the abandoned doorway with the two stone ledges, where he had first encountered her, while she was fighting with Luc.

At the end of the alley was the town square, vacant now that it was evening. The large fountain that stood in the center flowed smoothly, its weaving streams of water lit red-orange by the setting sunlight as evening began to fall. Soran stood at the mouth of the alley and watched the fountain thoughtfully, then looked at Mizuki. "At this time of night, no one's out, even here. All gathering at the taverns or eating with their families. So I always have this to myself," he said, watching the golden light shimmering through the fountain, reflecting across the sandy turf of the barren square in a warm orange. He had watched it hundreds of times, and the novelty of its beauty had worn off, but it still had its vague comforting effect on him. And this time, he wasn't watching it alone.

Mizuki's mouth opened in awe and almost dropped the blob. Her hands went to her mouth so the blob slithered up onto her shoulders, barely noticeable. The place's intamency made something click in the back of her mind. 'He had this to himself,' she thought excitedly, 'So, am I the only other person he show'd this to?' She blushed feircly at the idea.

She forced herself under control. Repeating in her head that this probably didn't mean anything. She brought her hands back down to her sides and just watched the fountain glow in the setting sunlight.

The Blob on her should sensed her tension, so it started to vibrate its jelly-like body to tickle her neck. Mizuki jumped at the sudden vibration and grabbed at the blob, who skillfully averted her hand and disspeared in her clothes.

"I think that little blob has a sense of humor." she said, slightly annoyed.

"Haha! I shall smite you now with the princess' magic witch!" Tensho bravely declared. He flung the sand at her, then moved forward and slashed at the imaginary witch with his imaginary sword. "The witch is vanquished!" he declared.

"Yay!" Rai said and ran to Tensho, hugging his leg tightly and giggling.

"You saved me! Now you have to marry me!" Rai proclaimed. "Because thats what theknights do!"

Soran raised an eyebrow at the blob's behavior, not sure why it was funny, though he didn't perceive the tiny thing as a threat. For now, he was content to ignore it. Leaning against the wall outside the alley, he pulled a hand back through his dark hair, thinking. He looked sideways at Mizuki, the glow of the sunset on her hair and skin making her a more stunning sight than the fountain. His lips parted, about to say so, but closed again.

"I was at the tavern, before," he started; stopped. Somewhere in the last five minutes, he'd made his decision, but suddenly getting to the subject seemed next to impossible. He stared back at the fountain, tension tightening his jawline. "A girl was there, upset.. the man she'd been watching found someone before she could approach him." He stopped again, stuck.

"I'm not skilled at talking," he said, unexpected frustration in his voice. "I don't deal with people well. I function much better alone." He paused to figure out what he was getting at, realizing in the back of his mind that if he didn't make sense of this soon, his frustration could be interpreted as something aimed at her and not at himself.

Mizuki giggled unexpectatly. "I can tell." She smiled at him. "The moment I met you 'loner' was written on your forehead." She smiled more. "When we ended up getting more involved with each other, unintentionaly, I made it a small mission to open you up." She paused and looked back at the fountain.

After a few moments, she sighed deeply and continued, "Even though you were distant, you were interesting. You're dangerous, but I couldn't help my attraction towards you." She blushed the moment she let it slip. She almost stopped talking right there, she wanted to smack herself and blame the fountain's intoxicating beauty that made people say things at random. "Er--"

Soran glanced back to her, his mind numb for a moment. He wasn't sure if he was being criticized or complimented or--attraction?...

He was second-guessing, pondering, thinking of every meaning those words could have except the one he wanted them to. He blinked and made his eyes meet hers. "I have..no experience with this," he said tensely, another disclaimer. His composure was fraying, the controlled face he wore wavering. "I've spent whole years of my life with my primary objective being to avoid the burden of dealing with people, with..this, and all the trouble and risk that comes with it. And you came, and that got ripped away somehow, and I was thrown into everything I wanted to avoid." He kept his eyes matched to hers, and the accusing, frustrated tone abruptly fell away from his voice. "You...are worth it. You're more than worth all of it. I don't regret it." He fell off, feeling like something was clenching over his vocal cords, curbing him now, when he was this close to saying it.

"You...are worth it. You're more than worth all of it. I don't regret it."

'Worth it..' she thought. Funny how two words could send you careening back into the past. Luc had told her she was special to him, but when it came down to it, she wasn't worth enough for him to risk his life. That was proven when he had ratted their ship out.

And here Soran, a distant man, saved her the moment they met. He could've just walked away, he could've just said 'goodbye' so many times, but he stayed. As much as she tried to control herself, tears pricked her eyes, but she knew she shouldn't cry or she'd just end up making Soran completely stop. Tears wouldn't help at all...

... And neither does staring out at the fountain completely awe struck.

"I..." she tried to speak, but she choked. Her hearted pounded insistantly and she was blushing violently.

Soran followed her eyes, trying to follow what was going on in her seemingly troubled expression. It appeared that he was upsetting her. Probably, all of this was a bad idea. But he needed to get through this, to be sure - not of her feelings, but that she understood his. If she reacted negatively, he told himself, he would deal with it.

"Mizuki," he said, the mask gone from his voice, low and warm and laced with nerves. His hand found hers and closed around it, because she wouldn't look at him, as he stepped to the edge of the cliff.

Resolved, he jumped off. "I care for you. I'm in love with you." Explosions went off in his head, anticipation and shock and glory and fear and pain throwing sparks that glowed in his green eyes as he watched her.

Mizuki's heart skipped a beat. She might have even stopped breathing as she looked at him. Her stomach did a flip as she saw in his eyes that it was clearly true. For a split second she thought she'd vomit on him, thankfully she didn't.

Instead, tears fell down her face as her eyes glowed and she fell into him.

Love...

In its captivating magic she lost herself as she started to kiss his face. Love makes people lose their pride and self dignity, thankfully she had already come to terms with them. If she was going to make a fool of herself, then fine. She wanted him to know all too badly that her heart swelled to the point of explosion.

She wrapped her arms around his neck and kissed him passionatly.

Soran's stomach dropped as he saw her tears, thinking he'd found her reaction, but then she leaned into him and he felt her lips meet his, warmth spreading through his body. He was stunned for a moment, and then fell into the kiss as well, his arms circling her waist, protecting her and keeping her there with him. Barely-controlled emotion and relief surged through him, and if he had been capable of speaking at that moment, he'd still have been unable to utter a sound.
