Lore: Fugitives

This is the forest that covers most of Ighten in dense and thick trees. It is the oldest forest in Heirot, since most of the Forests in Arken have been destroyed. It is well known as a haunted forest where ghosts and demons reside. In the forest are many villages. The villagers will tell you tales of trees that eat people, gaint spiders, and dragon lairs.

Rai's little heart was thudding in her chest as Soran held onto her. She wrapped her arms around his neck and held him closely. She knew she had to be quiet, so she tried her best.

That was until she noticed the rather large spider crawling up the side of the tree they were hiding against. It was just about to crawl onto Soran's head. Rai whimpered, wanting to get far away from the creepy little creature that frightened her so. She covered her mouth, trying not to get any louder. However, her whimpering grew as the spider made its way on to the side of Soran's head that was closest to her.

"Rai!" Soran whispered, peering around the bush with no knowledge of the spider on his head.

"I heard something over there," said one of the soldiers, and the footsteps began coming in their direction. Soran held Rai to the side and readied his blades.

"So," Sid said, his voice less friendly, "You're hurt to death that Rhen won't trust you in his head, but you can't trust him unless he wants to share everything with you? I suppose you share everything with him, then, as well. Like how you're feeling right now, you've told him everything already, I assume," he said firmly.

"I trust him with my life, and my heart." Mizuki retorted coldly. "I just don't understand how to make him feel safer with me." Angry with herself now for being foolish that an old friend of Soran's could help, Mizuki walked away and stared off in the direction Soran and Rai had walked off to. After cooling off her edged nerves, Mizuki noticed the time that had passed.

"Where are you?" she whispered to herself, growing worried.

Soran's muscles wound up as the soldiers came right past him, and he sprang. Nothing flashy - he cut the soldier's neck open with a stealthy movement and then pinned the dying man to his chest, easing him to the ground to avoid making noise. He kept Rai held close to him, not wanting her off on her own while an unknown number of soldiers surrounded them.

He crouched low to the ground and listened for his next target.

Rai looked at the dead body on the ground, observing it as no child should. She watched as the blood pored from the wound and the man's eyes gave off this eerie blank stare. She then looked back up at Soran wondering how he found it so easy to do that and if she ever would find it easy to kill.

She kept quiet, wondering why they were still hiding, wasn't this the last one?

Soran paused several moments longer, taking stock of every small sound of the forest around him. Suddenly, he gripped Rai securely and dashed out of his cover, running across the woods toward where he knew two were standing. They shouted out as he appeared in front of them, raising their weapons, but Soran was faster. He free blade threw a hook across the first man's neck, and then he drew the dagger end back with his elbow into the chest of the second soldier.

Voices were shouting in the woods now as the other soldiers came running toward the source of the noise. Soran jumped up and grabbed a low tree branch, pulling himself up with one arm as a soldier came out of the brush beneath him. The rogue let himself fall, heaving a dropkick onto the man's shoulder that floored him without a sound.

About two minutes later, Soran was standing among a small group of corpses without a scratch on him. He caught his breath and listened to the sounds around him. Although he heard nothing, there was still the chance that during the fight, one of them had run back to warn the others. And there would be others. If they were this far north already, the situation was worse than they'd thought. "Are you hurt?" he asked Rai in a low voice.

Rai shook her head and then looked up at Soran. "I'm fine," she said softly, a little aggitated about being carted around like a handbag. She looked around, wondering if there were anymore.

Soran took a deep breath and nodded. "Good," he said, letting her down onto her own legs. "This means trouble," he observed as he surveyed the dead. "Try to stay close to me, until we reach the capital." He wiped his blades against a mossy tree trunk.

Rai looked up at Soran quickly. "What about mommy?" She paused for a moment. "And Mr. Sid?" she asked and didn't not flinch away from Soran as if wanting to protect Sid was a bad thing. After all she did not understand the history between Sid and Soran.

Soran nodded at Rai. "Yeah, we should get back to them too," he said and started walking back toward the camp. He didn't try to pick Rai up again, although it would let them go faster. Somehow he found it hard to look at her after making her watch so much violence. He tried not to think about it too much; it couldn't be helped.

Ahead, he could see the area where they'd made camp earlier. He hoped the soldiers had not made it there as well. He was fairly sure Mizuki could hold her own, but Sid was a wild card.

Sid remained where he was against the tree, not bothering to argue with Mizuki any further. Why should he be concerned for their relationship anyway? If anything, he was jealous of their intimacy. He nodded to himself decisively, sticking his nose up and away from her like a stubborn kid.

Rai blinked and looked up at Soran. She ran to catch up with him and put her small fingers around two of his fingers. Holding his hand, she looked up at him with a smile, almost as if she could since that there was something wrong with him.

"Daddy..." she said and gave him a big smile. "Will you teach me to fight like that when I grow up?" she asked him. Her eyes sparkled with excitement. She couldn't wait for the day when she would be an adult... and Soran would teach her everything he knew.

Soran made himself look down at her. Her big, innocent eyes were shining with excitement. He didn't want her to fight like him, but the world wasn't going to change. If she would need those skills to survive, he would be the one to teach her. And he would not make it a burden on her like it had been on him. Why not let her be excited about it; it wasn't ALL bad.

"You bet. For your first lesson, don't give away your location because of a spider," Soran told her with a mock-stern smirk. He ruffled up her hair.

Rai looked at him and giggled. "But, it was a really, really big spider... It was the size of your hand!" she said, though knowing full and well it was only the size of a small pebble. However, everything seemed bigger to Rai. "It was going to eat you!" she said, poking him in the side with her finger several times. "I tried to save you!" Rai giggled playfully, hugging Soran's hand too her and swinging back and forth.

Mizuki watched the trees carefully, having completely forgotten about Sid as her mind fixated itself on Soran and Rai. Finally, she saw them and ran towards them.

"There you are!" she called out.

Soran looked up as Mizuki called to them, relieved to see her. He walked quickly to meet her and gave her a small smile despite himself. "We ran into some minor trouble. Was everything alright here?"
