All right. I finally started a story of my own. I've been working really hard on it! So please read and leave some good feedback! ^_^

Okay...The beginning here is actually an RPG I'm making. I just put it in here as a prologue because you'll need to read it to understand everything else. K? K!!!

----------THE LEGEND OF KISTERA----------
Long before time began, the God of Life, Efil, decided to make a world where everyon ecould be happy. He made Royaume and humans. He was very glad with his work and told his wife, the Godess of Wisdom, Modsiw, to give his creations wisdom and knowledge so they could survive. So she did.

But the Godess of Magic, Kigam, did not like Royaume. She wanted to make humans who had powers like her own and the other gods. They would be stronger. So, she made witches and warlocks. Then, she made the island of Magie Amor for them to live in.

Then, the God of Death, Thead, decided to create people who would serve him. He ruled the the underworld, and he was evil. So, he created demons and vampires to follow them and created Obscurite for them to live in. The vampires he created did not like the sun, so they cursed the land to be night time most of the day. 23 hours a day, it is night. There are no stars in the sky. Just blackness.

The Godess of Love, Evol, did not like Thead's wickedness. So, she made magical creatures which she called elves to live in the place she created, the Banni Forest. They could live much longer than humans. She was proud of her creation, but the other gods and godesses envied her magical creations. So they were banned to interact with the humans and the others because they were so different.

Then, the Godess of Truth, Thurt, asked for help creating one last place. She asked the God of Sorrow, Worros, and the God of Courage, Egaruc. They created Seulement. They didn't create any people to go there. They created Seulement as a haven for all those who needed it.

The gods knew that, someday, the people they created would fight. They knew they needed to prevent it somehow. So, they gave each of the main places its own element. Royaume held Air. Magie Amor held Water. Obscurite held Fire. And Banni Forest held Earth. The elements would rest within four chosen people. They would gather in Seulement and the fifth element, Spirit, would descend from the Heavens and create peace.

The time has come for the elements to gather. A war is coming...

Part 1 - The End

Blood dripped down his face. His jet black hair was plastered to his head with sweat and blood. His black coat was soaked as well. His white shirt, now red, clung onto him like Amoya had before. He inspected himself briefly. Blood poured out of the gash across his chest. His broken arm was shaking from blood loss. He could feel that some of his ribs were broken, and one of them had cut into his lung because he had been coughing up blood. He had cuts all over his body.

Kalan. Kalan.

He could still hear her calling his name, but he knew that was impossible; Amoya was already dead.

Tears rolled down his face and mixed with sweat and blood. The demon that stood before him seemed amused at this. As it started to swing its blade at him again, Kalan quickly dodged it with a roll to his right. Amoya’s lifeless body lay there. He grabbed the sword that she had used, for his was somewhere else. He swung the blade a few times to get used to it and ran to attack the demon that had just killed her.

---------------------

“Kalan, we don’t have to go to Obscurite,” Amoya told him.

“Yes, we do. We have to find Fire. I know this is the probably the hardest one to find, but at least the worst will be behind us.”

“What if we’re not ready?”

Kalan smiled and kissed her cheek. “Don’t worry. We’ve been training for this. We’ll be ready.” His golden eyes flashed with hope and confidence.

“Kalan…I know. We should really keep an open mind, though. Anything could happen.” She wrapped her arms around him and buried her face into his muscular chest. “Why don’t we just go to Banni Forest first? They have Earth. That should be easier, and we can count it as more training for Obscurite.”

He returned the embrace. “My love, please stop worrying.” He held her chin up with his left hand and looked into her emerald green eyes. “I’ll protect you from anything. I promise I won’t let anything happen to you.”

Amoya nodded her head and fell into his loving embrace.

--------------------

As he dodged the demon’s attacks, flashbacks rushed through his mind. Was he dying?

He thrust the sword into the demon’s heart, who flinched and howled in pain. As a puddle of blood formed around them, Kalan withdrew the sword and returned it to his side. The demon lay on the ground in front of him cursing until it finally died. When he knew for sure that he was dead, he limped over to Amoya’s body and kneeled beside her. Her eyes were closed, and her clothes were stained with blood.

“Amoya,” he said,” I’m so sorry. I should have listened to you. And because of me, you’re dead.”

He picked her up with his unbroken arm and
held her lifeless body close to him. He buried his face in her dark brown hair and cried. How could he have been so stupid? He should have known this would happen. He knew Obscurite was filled with demons and vampires. Going to Banni, where the elves and Fallens were, would have been easier for Kara. She was too young to handle this. Too young to die. Even going to Magie Amor, with the witches, would have been better. The witches had Water. They had to find all four of the elements, the people who the elements lived within.

Kalan was Air.

When all four of the elements came together, they had a chance of preventing the war, but they had failed their mission.

“I’m so sorry, Amoya. I shouldn’t have been so stupid. I promised I wouldn’t let anything happen to you; I broke that promise. I don’t deserve to be forgiven…Amoya…”

Kalan leaned over and kissed her lips. She tasted of blood, but he didn’t care. Then, he felt himself losing consciousness and lay beside her. And before he slipped into sleep, he heard her voice.

My love, I will be with you ever and always. Don’t blame yourself. I love you, and I always will. Remember what you always told me.

He looked up into the black sky and smiled. “The truest magic is within the heart,” he said placing his hand over his chest.

Remember. I’ll be there.

He nodded and removed his hand from his chest. And for a moment, he could swear that he saw her standing over him before he slipped into a dreamless sleep.

Part 2 - Second Chances

The sun’s rays beat down on him. He knew he needed to get up because it would only be day for an hour. Amoya’s body still lay next to him. He still tasted her kiss; the metallic taste of blood was still in his mouth. Fortunately, his wounds had stopped bleeding. Perhaps Efil had been watching over him.

He slowly pulled himself off of the asphalt and began to make his way to Royaume. He needed to get to a hospital, but Banni Forest was closer. They had the medicines he needed, but the elves may not want to take in a human. The humans had banished them from entering Royaume. Why would they let them into their forest? But he needed medical attention…fast.

He started heading east to the forest, the place where Amoya had wanted to go first. He even considered staying in Obscurite until another demon came and finished him off. He knew he deserved to die for what he had done to Amoya.

As the sun began to set, he started walking faster. He couldn’t fail his mission. He couldn’t let Amoya down. For her, he would do anything. He loved her, so he could let himself die. He broke into a run, despite his injuries, towards the forest.

--------------------

“My lord, he is getting away,” the servant said.

“And the girl?”

“She is dead, sir.”

“Good.”

“The boy feels such strong emotion towards this girl. A kind of emotion our kind doesn’t experience.”

“Thead didn’t curse us with that, so we should be thankful.”

“Curse?”

“It’s called love, I think. It makes you do stupid things. It tricks you and deceives you. The witches say that it is the purest and truest form of magic, but I say that it is useless.”

“Love…Sounds weird. It also sounds cruel.”

“It is.”

“Was it love that the boy felt for this girl?”

“Most likely.”

“And the girl felt love for him. Is that why she died?”

“Probably.”

“I wonder what that boy wanted from here anyway?”

“He came…for me.”

--------------------

When he reached the edge of the forest, it was dusk. Kalan stopped to rest and checked his wounds. Although they should have been bleeding, they weren’t. He closed his eyes, said a prayer, and got back on his feet. As he entered the forest, he could hear wildlife in the trees. The owls were starting to come out, and the rabbits were scurrying everywhere as he walked along the now dirt road.

“Amoya would have loved to see this,” he said to himself sadly. “She had always loved the outdoors.”

“Would? Had? Past Tense. Your Amoya must be dead,” said an alien voice.

“Who’s there?”

Suddenly, a girl dressed in a green outfit and brown boots came out into the clearing. “Maikat. I was afraid you were one of the demons, but I see you are human. I guess you are welcome.”

“Ah. I‘m Kalan.”

“What were you doing in…” She trailed off when she saw his wounds. “What happened?” She pulled a bag off her shoulder and began digging through it.

“A demon attacked me.”

“And Amoya?”

“…Yes…”

She looked up at him with bright green eyes, which were full of such strong compassion and kindness. “I’m sorry. I have some medicine, which will help those wounds. Then, I can bring you into the village where you will be better treated.”

“Thanks, but why are you doing this?”

“We elves believe in the legend. Wars cannot be prevented when we refuse to help others. Demons and vampires on the other hand, don’t come here unless they want to kill some one. The vampires like the taste of elven blood.”

“We don’t get any vampires or demons in Royaume.”

“I imagine not. Humans are the wisest race, and there are more of them.”

“You seem pretty wise yourself, Maikat.”

“Please, call me ‘Kat’.”

“All right then, Kat.”

“Here.” Kat started putting medicine on his wounds. Sometimes she hurt him, and she apologized. When she was through, she put everything away and bandaged him up. It wasn’t very good, but it was good enough to get him to the village. “My horse is still in the woods. You can ride her.”

“Kat, its okay. I can walk.”

“No, you can ride. You’ve come this far. But tell me, Kalan, what brings you to the Banni Forest?”

“Amoya and I were looking for the people who held the power of the elements.” He said this as he climbed onto the buckskin mare.

“Yes,” she said as she pulled the horse into the direction of the village.

“She actually wanted to come here first, but I said that we should go to Obscurite first, so the worst would be behind us. When we arrived, we were attacked by a demon. I had promised her I wouldn’t let anything happen to her and…”

“Oh, Kalan.”

“I couldn’t protect her. She told me we weren’t ready to find Fire, but I didn’t listen. Now, she’s dead…because of me.”

“Don’t blame yourself, Kal. She wouldn’t want you to. Who was she to you any way?”

“Everything and more.”

“So, you loved her?”

“More than life itself.”

“Life is a gift, you know.”

“I would die 1,000 deaths if it meant she could come back, but I can’t do that.”

“Yeah, it’s impossible.”

“It’s not just that.”

“Hm?”

“I am Air.”

Part 3 - Somewhere Between Life and Death

“Happy Valentine’s Day, Amoya,” he said handing her a bouquet of flowers.

“Forget-me-nots. My favorite!”

“Of course.”

“Thank you, Kalan. They’re wonderful.” She leaned over and briefly kissed him on his mouth. Then, she smiled and walked into the kitchen. “Close your eyes.”

Kalan closed his eyes. He heard her giggling and talking to herself, telling herself that he’d love her gift.

“All right,” she said. “Open them.”

In her hand, she held a golden pendant. It was in the shape of a star; it symbolized the five elements. Then, she pulled a gold chain out of her pocket and slid the pendant onto it. Finally, she placed the necklace around his neck. The pendant hung low to the bottom of his sternum.

“Do you like it?” she asked.

“Baby, I love it!” He wrapped both of his arms around her and pulled her close to a hot, steamy kiss. Afterwards, he ran his fingers through her hair and whispered, “There’s something else I have to give you.”

She smiled. “Really? What is it?”

“Close your eyes.”

“Oh, come on, Kal.”

“You made me close mine.”

“Oh, all right.”

Kalan reached into his pocket and pulled out a small box. Inside it was 10k diamond ring. He grabbed her left hand and gently and slowly slid it onto her ring finger. “How do you like it?”

She opened her eyes and could hardly see it for her tears. “Yes.”

Kalan held Amoya in his arms and swung her around in circles. She giggled the whole time, while tears of joy ran down her face.

--------------------

“Why are you crying?” Maikat asked innocently.

“Memories, that’s all,” Kalan replied. “And I’m feeling a little dizzy. Are we almost there?”

“Yes. Just a few more minutes. You may be running a fever.” She placed her right hand on his forehead to feel his temperature. “Yes, you are; it feels unnaturally high.”

“How high?”

“I’m not good at guessing, but it’s well over 100.”

Kalan nodded his head and wiped his eyes. He couldn’t believe he was crying, but then again, he could. He loved Amoya so much. He’d do anything to bring her back.

“Kat! Hey! Who’s with you?” asked a Fallen who ran out of the village to greet them. He stood about Kalan’s height but weighed less. He had silver hair and dark eyes, and he wore a black cloak.

“Oh, Asten! This is Kalan. He’s wounded,” she replied.

“Yes, of course. Cassandra will know what to do with him.”

“Who’s Cassandra?” Kalan asked.

“My sister,” Asten told him. “She’s an expert in medicine.”

“Well,” Kat said, “He’s definitely going to need an expert. He’s got a punctured lung, at least four broken ribs, a broken arm, a huge cut across his chest, and a high fever.”

Asten looked surprised. “What happened?”

“A demon attacked me,” Kal told him.

“Was anyone with you?”

When Kalan didn’t answer, he took it as a “yes”. Then, he wrapped Kalan’s right, unbroken arm around his shoulder and started carrying him towards Cassandra’s house. Kalan insisted that he walk, but Asten ignored him and kept carrying him. When they arrived, Cassandra came to the door. She also had silver hair and dark eyes, but she wore a black dress instead of a cloak.

“Asten, who is this?” she asked. Maikat was walking behind them.

“Kalan was attacked by demons,” Asten told her.

“Bring him in.”

Kalan started feeling dizzy and lightheaded. Everything was blurry. Some things he saw were in black and white, and some were in color. But somehow, they sort of mixed and made a blur of colors and figures.

“Kalan, are you all right?” Maikat asked.

He could hardly hear her as he looked up at her. He felt like he wasn’t even touching the ground. He couldn’t recognize anything because of the dizziness.

“Amoya…” he mumbled before losing consciousness.

--------------------

“I don’t know how he survived.”

“He told me he was Air. That could be why.”

“Being an element doesn’t make you immortal.”

“The gods were protecting him.”

“Not that it will matter. His fever is so high. I doubt he'll make it."

“What should we do, Cass? The humans will eventually come to look for him, and whatever happens to him, they’ll blame us.”

“Just because we are different.”

“Yes.”

“Humans: they think they know everything. You give them an inch, they walk all over you.”

“Stomp.”

“Even better.”

“But we really shouldn’t be so sore about it. He came to look for the elements and prevent the war. That’s why the gods chose him. He’s different from the other humans.”

“Aye, he is, Kat.”

“What should we do?”

“Do the best we can. There’s nothing else we can do.”

“What if he dies?”

“Then, there will be a war after all.”

Part 4 - The Truest Magic

Kalan was sitting in his room. It was full of gothic posters and dirty clothes. He held a knife to his wrist. His black hair hung over his golden eyes. He wore all black. He knew what he should do. Why wasn’t he doing it? He could end all of his pain misery right here, but something was stopping him. Then, he heard footsteps coming towards his room. He quickly hid the knife under his pillow and turned away from the door.

His father walked in the room.

“Kalan, what in the hell do you think you’re doing?”

“I’m not doing anything. Why do you always have to suspect me of everything?”

“Because when you do actually do something, it’s wrong. Everything you’ll ever do is wrong. Get used to it.”

“Gee, thanks for all your support, dad.”

“Are you being a smart ass with me?”

“Maybe I am.”

The man marched over to Kalan and gripped his shoulders firmly. He stood only a few inches taller than him. “You don’t talk to me that way. But then, you never were smart enough to know right from wrong, were you?”

“Stupidity is hereditary. We both know where I get it from.”

“Silence, fool!” he yelled giving Kalan a blow to the face, knocking him on the floor. Blood dripped from his bottom lip.

As he started to leave the room, Kalan asked him, “Was there ever a time, even in the smallest bit, that you loved me at all?”

He stopped momentarily, and there was silence. Then he answered with another question, “Who could, honestly, love a mistake?”

“You don’t mind the fact that you killed mom. That was a mistake.”

“Well, I’m sorry the world was short of bitches like her. That’s what’s wrong with you now. You let a woman hold you back.”

--------------------

He opened his eyes to find himself in someone’s bedroom. Inside, there was desk, which was piled with weapons and other things. There were end tables with pictures of Asten, Cassandra, and Maikat. Where was he?

“Oh? Awake already?” asked a familiar voice.

It was Maikat.

“Wh-where am I?”

“My house. Cass got you all bandaged up, so I brought you here. How are you feeling?”

“Starving.”

“I bet.” She giggled. “Here, have some soup. I put some herbs in it that will help your wounds.”

“Thank you.” She handed him a bowl of soup and some hot tea. He took it gratefully and began to
eat.

“So, how’s it like in Royaume?”

He paused for a moment, remembering his dream. “It’s…different.”

“Different how?”

“The people here are much nicer, or maybe it’s just me.”

“What do you mean?”

“Exactly that. People in Royaume are snobs. They think they’re better than everybody.”

“I see.”

“Um…Yeah.”

“There’s more to it, isn’t there?”

“I didn’t say that.”

“No, but your eyes do.”

He paused and stared at her. How could she know by looking in his eyes that there was more?
Was she telepathic? “My eyes?”

“Yes, I love your eyes. Ever since I saw you, I haven’t been able to look away from them.”

“Are you flirting with me, hoping I’ll tell you?”

“Is it working?”

“A little bit.”

“Just tell me, Kal.”

“Nah, it’s too depressing.”

“Tell me.”

Kal thought of how he would word it and whether he should really tell her or not. Inside, he felt as if he should tell her, so he bgan. “My father murdered my mother when I was nine. He drowned her in the bathtub while I watched. He told me if I tried to stop him, he would kill me, too. I was too scared to tell the police until I was in my late teens. When I told them, they didn’t believe me.”

“What did they think happened to her?”

“They thought she committed suicide.”

“What did you do?”

“After she died, my father was horribly abusive to me. I was suicidal, and I would, sometimes, cut myself to keep my mind off of him. Then, I met Amoya…”

There was silence as he trailed off. When bowed his head and tried to hold back his tears. His father would have hit him for crying; it wasn’t manly to cry.

“What did your father think of her?”

“He hated her. He told me that we could never be. I would fall in love and do all kinds of stupid things. Then, he dropped it and told me it didn’t matter because I did stupid things anyway. He was right.”

“No, he wasn’t.”

“You don’t even know me.”

“I know you don’t give up. I know you try your best no matter how useless or hopeless the situation may be. I know that you are brave and strong. I know that you are the nicest human I have ever met…”

“You’ve…met a human before?”

She sniffed, and a tear rolled down her left cheek. “Don’t worry about it.”

“Kat…” She held her head down until he made his way out of her bed and kneeled at where she was sitting. “Tell me.”

“His name was Axhel. He had long, brown hair to his shoulders and silver-blue eyes. He was about your height, but he weighed a little more. He usually wore blue robes with silver lining. I loved him, and I thought he loved me. One day, though, we went into the village, and a little elven boy came up wanting to sell us some jewelry. He told us that he needed to sell it, or his mother would be mad at him. I started looking through what he had, and Axhel told me to come on and forget about it. I ignored him and finally found a bracelet I liked. I bought it, and we started heading back here. When we were out of sight of everyone, he grabbed my hair and threw me against a tree. He yelled at me and told me to never disobey him again. Then, he started hitting me and calling me names…”

“What did you do?”

“I…I know this spell. It’s illegal to use it, but I did anyway. I…I killed him. I was so angry, and so…hurt. I just didn’t know what else to do. I’m such a horrible person. I-”

“Stop it.”

“Wha-?”

“You are not a horrible person. He was the horrible one. You killed him in self-defense.”

“But still.”

“But nothing! Kat…” he framed her face with his hands and began to wipe away some tears that had begun to form in her eyes. “A horrible person wouldn’t take in a stranger and nurse him back to health. A horrible person wouldn’t have good friends like Asten and Cassandra. A horrible person…” He trailed off. He wanted to say “isn’t someone I would fall in love with.” Now, he felt horrible. How could he love her? He loved Amoya. What was he, some kind of two-timer? Or, maybe it was okay. Amoya was dead, and she wasn’t coming back.

“What?”

“Nothing…”

“You were going to say something else.”

“No, I wasn’t. I was just rambling.”

“Okay…Thank you…Kal.”

“Of course.” They were so close now. He could - and he knew he wanted to - kiss her right now. The moment was perfect, but they had just met, and she had already been through a horrible experience. He didn’t need to push it. Instead, he removed his hands and got back in bed to finish his soup. He realized it was cold, but ate it anyway.

“I’ll…go tell Cassandra you’re awake,” she said and walked out of the room. When he heard the front door shut, he set his soup on the table next to the bed. He had lost his appetite.

Part 5 - Farewell

“We’re almost there. I can smell him already,” a female demon said. It was dusk in the forest, and she and her small army of six had just entered it. The night creatures of the forest were afraid to come out and greet their new visitors. “Yes, he’s been through here. I bet one of the elves decided to help him. Whichever one of the elves helped him, we shall kill them also.”

“My lady, Sade” said an inferior male demon.

“Yes, Scaliber,” she answered in an annoyed tone.

“Why kill him? Nash is Fire. He will never go to Suelement. He doesn’t want to prevent the war. In fact, he is training an army because he knows there will be one. This is a waste of our time. The other elements need Nash to prevent the war, and he’s not going to do it.”

“You have a point, yes. Well, I have three reasons. One, you can never be too careful. Two, Nash is simple-minded and gullible.”

“Ah, I see.”

“And three, killing is fun.” She laughed and placed her left index finger on Scaliber’s chin. “Don’t you agree?”

Scaliber was a few inches taller than Sade, so the setting sun made a sparkling light in her eyes. “Yes, my lady. Perhaps we should just go ahead and kill everyone in the village?”

“No, I have a better idea.” She turned around pointed to a wolf, which was hiding behind a tree. “You see that wolf? It’s alone. It probably wants to die because it is so lonely. We want our victims to suffer, yes? Then, we should make them suffer. Kill the ones they love.” An evil smile formed across her face. “We should go ahead and kill the boy, though. He killed one of our kind; he must pay.”

“You are clever.”

“Of course. Now, we must move on.”

---------------------

Maikat walked onto Cassandra’s front porch and knocked on the door. Asten answered it.

“Oh, hi, Kat! We were just about to have dinner. How’s Kalan?”

“Fine. He just woke up.”

“That’s good.”

“Yes, that’s the only reason I came.”
Asten made a pitiful face. “You mean…you don’t like me anymore? You mean you don’t care about me anymore?” Asten did this many times before.

“Asten, don’t be so pathetic.” Maikat laughed.

“Please stay, Kat. I love you. Let’s just run away together, love. Marry me.”

“Where will we go?”

“Anywhere but here.”

Then, Cassandra came to the door laughing. “Jeez, Asten. That’s the fourth time you’ve proposed to her this week. Give her a break, man.”

“But, sister,” he said kissing Kat’s hand, “I’m in love with her.”

“Stop it, Asten, or you’re going to make her lose her appetite. Having to look at you is enough to make any woman sick.”

“Oh, I’m not staying for dinner,” Maikat told her. “I just came to tell you that Kal was awake.”

“Well, come in anyway.”

“Marry me, Maikat.”

“Sorry, darling. Marrying you would be a punishment.”

Asten smiled and wrapped his arms around her shoulders. “Is rum a punishment?”

“Oh, it’s tempting. I love rum.”

“I do, too. It tastes good, but it would taste better on your lips.”

“What if I told you I just got through kissing Kalan?”

Cassandra’s jaw dropped, and Asten tried to make a sad face. He wasn’t a good actor, but he was funny to watch. “You’ve been cheating on me? I mean…enough with the joke. You kissed him? A human!”

“Just kidding, guys.”

“Oh, good.” Asten scooped Kat off her feet and carried her inside. “Maybe I can get you drunk and-”

“Asten!” Cassandra scolded him.

“Jeez, Cass. I was only kidding.”

“Well, that joke is starting to get old.”

“It worked, didn’t it?”

“No,” Kat said. “The rum did it.”

“See? Only someone who loved you would know that rum is your favorite.”

--------------------

It was getting late. Kalan wondered where Maikat could be. He was worried, but he couldn’t get up and look for her. He was too weak.

It’s all right, Kal. Calm down. Cassandra is her best friend. They’re probably just running their mouths.

To keep from worrying, he went back to sleep.

He was standing on the edge of a cliff. The wind blew his black hair, and the sun shone in his golden eyes. Amoya stood next to him.

“Amoya,” he said,” I’m so sorry.”

“For what?”

“For letting you die and liking that elven girl.”

“All is forgiven, Kal.”

“It is?”

“I didn’t expect you to love me after I died. Even if we were engaged, I don’t care. I want you to move on. Please move on. Forget about me.”

“I will never forget about you, Amoya.”

“You should. Every time you think about me in the future, it will effect your relationship with Maikat.”

“I will never love her as much as I loved you.”

“Don’t say that so soon. Everything happens for a reason. Maybe… we just weren’t meant to be.”

“Don’t say that.”

“Why else would I die?”

“Because I’m careless and stupid.”

“Kat doesn’t think so.”

“Would you stop mentioning her?”

“You love her, Kal.”

“But I love you.”

“’Till death do us part.’ You must move on, Kal.”

“Only if you really want me to.”

“I do. I want you to forget about me. Stop counting your yesterdays and start counting your tomorrows.”

“I will. Goodbye…Amoya.”

Part 6 - Closer

“Kat…” Asten whispered.

“Yes, love?” she whispered back.

“Now that we’re both drunk, would you marry me?”

Kat laid her head on the table and started laughing. “Sure, but I’d like a beautiful diamond ring.”

“I’m not made of money, Kat.”

“No,” Cass agreed, “You’re made of filth.”

Laughter burst from all three of them. It was almost midnight; they had been drinking rum for nearly four hours.

“So, if I’m the filth of the family, what does that make you?” Asten asked.

“Well,” Maikat said, “I think a slut would live with filth.”

“I’m not a slut!” Cass said laughing.

“No, she’s not,” Asten agreed. “More rum anyone?”

“Me!” both of the girls shouted at him. He left the room to go into the basement to get
more rum.

“Poor Kalan,” Cass said shaking her head.

“Why do you say that?”

“He’s all alone at your house…missing out on the rum, but it’s okay. He probably found some way to entertain himself. Who knows? He may have decided to take a peek in your underwear drawer.”

“Shut up, Cass!”

“You never know.”

“Never know what?” Asten asked carrying a bottle of rum.

“Nothing. You never know nothing.” Kat answered.

“Huh?”

“Never mind. Hit me, pumpkin.” She slid her glass towards him.

“Pumpkin?”

“Yes, pumpkin. It’s a big, orange thing that’s full of seeds. You can make pie out of it.”

“I know what it is, smart ass.”

“Then why’d you ask?”

“Forget it. Here’s your drink.”

“Thanks…um…dear.”

Cass looked outside to see where the moon was. She saw that it was almost directly over them. “It’s around midnight, Kat. You better get home to your lover.”

“Ha ha. Very funny, Cass. He’s not my lover.”

“Well,” Asten said, “He’s sleeping in your bed.”

“That doesn’t mean anything. My cat sleeps in my bed. That doesn’t mean I’m having an affair with it.”

“Uh…” Cass stated under her breath. “I hope not.”

“I heard that.”

“Good night, my love. I shall see you in the morning.” Asten said in a playful voice.

“Yes. Good night…future husband.”

Cassandra gasped. “Are you accepting his proposal?

“Nope. I was just kidding.”

The three started laughing, and Asten stumbled to the door to open it for Maikat. After Maikat started heading home, so did Asten. He didn’t have as far to go as Maikat, though. She lived a quarter of a mile away from Cassandra’s. Asten only lived next door.

As he got to his front door, he wondered of he really liked Maikat. He had always had a crush on her when they were younger. Then, they became best friends. Did he still like her? Did he love her, now?

Nah, he thought to himself. I care about her, but not that way. It’s normal for friends to care about each other that much.

But, Asten was unaware that he was being watched as he walked into his house. In the woods, his stalker smiled and said, “We’ll attack tomorrow night.”

--------------------

Kalan sat up in his bed. His dream…Was it real? Was Amoya really talking to him? He rubbed his face with his hands. He was still tired, but he never heard Kat come in. Just then, the front door opened.

“I’m…Ouch! I never knew that chair was there…home!” she called. She stumbled into his room and smiled at him. “Wow! It’s dark in here. We need some light. She grabbed a candle off of the desk, but kept dropping it.

Kalan laughed. “Kat, are you drunk?”

“Me? Drunk? I’m not drunk; the candle is. It keeps dropping…”

“What did you do at Cassandra’s?”

“Um…We folded socks!”

“For four hours?” Kalan was amused.

“Yep! We did Asten’s laundry, too. And he goes through a lot of socks ‘cause he has really stinky feet.”

“Okay…Did you drink anything?”

“Yes.”

“What did you drink?”

“Pumpkin juice!”

“What?”

“Oh, my gods! Asten didn’t know what a pumpkin was either. It’s a big, orange thing that has seeds in it. You can make pie out of it.”

“And juice?”

“And juice! Isn’t that great?”

“No.”

“What? You don’t believe me?”

“Not at all.”

“Oh. It’s okay. It was a lie anyway.”

“Come sit down.”

“Where?”

“On the bed.”

“Uh…Okay!” Maikat skipped her way to the bed and sat right on Kal’s lap. “So, what’s up, sexy?”

“Sexy? You think I’m sexy?”

“Uh huh!” She placed her hands on his chest and smiled. “I’ve been wanting to do that for a long time.”

Kalan blushed. “Okay. Well, you can do it as…much as you like.”

Maikat laughed. “Oh…I’m so tired, but Cass said I need to stay up and watch you.”

“I won’t tell if you don’t.”

Kat rolled over next to Kal and laid down. She placed her head on his shoulder and closed her eyes. “Mind if I sleep here?”

“I don’t mind at all.”

“Mm-kay. Good night, Kalan.”

“Good night, Kat.”

He didn’t dare put his arms around her, although he wanted to. He knew that the only reason she was doing this was because she was drunk. She didn’t like him. This didn’t mean anything, but it was worth it. He felt her soft breath against his chest, and it made all of his muscles tense. As gently as he could, he ran his fingers through her dark brown hair. Then, he mouthed the words, “I love you,” and finally went to sleep.

--------------------

“Tomorrow night? My lady, why not now? That was the girl who helped Air. We must kill those she loves!”

“Shut up, Nuktura, I know what I’m doing! There may be others. We can’t kill them now, or all of the elves and Fallens will be more careful. We will wait and see if there’s anyone else she loves.”

“Yes, my lady,” said the demon named Nuktura.

Then, Scaliber spoke, “Should I follow the girl?”

“Yes. Follow her. Keep a close eye on her.”

Scaliber bowed to Sade and went in the direction Maikat went in. He was careful not to make too much noise, for he didn’t want to wake anyone up.

When he was out of sight, Sade turned to the remaining five demons. “As for you, I want every single one of you to split up into different sections of the village. Tomorrow, see who all talks about the one who is Air. Whichever ones seem the most concerned, we shall kill them that night.

“Yes, ma’am,” they said at different times. Then, they split up as Sade had ordered them to and left her alone.

“And I’ll watch these two,” she said evilly to herself.

Part 7 - Confessions and Promises

She awoke to warm sunlight on her face. Where was she? When she noticed that she was in a bed, Maikat figured that she had fallen asleep at Cassandra’s house. Then she finally opened her eyes. Why was she at her house in her room? Kalan slept in her room. Then, she turned and saw him sleeping next to her.

Oh, my gods! she thought.

She started shaking him, trying to wake him up and ask what she was doing there. “Kal! Kalan!”

Kalan groaned, “Mm…Kat? What is it?”

“Kal…What happened last night?!”

He laughed. “Oh, nothing. You came home from Cassandra’s drunk. You said you were tired, so I let you sleep here. I hope you don’t mind.”

“You promise that’s all that happened?”

“I promise. Well, there was one more thing.”

“Um…What did I do?”

“You told me I was sexy.”

“I…I did? I what?!”

“Do you really think I’m sexy, or was it just because you were drunk.”

“I…I…um, are you hungry?”

“Uh, yeah. A little.”

“All right then! I’ll, um, fix us some breakfast!”

When she left the room, Kal took her quick change of the subject as a “yes” to his question. Then, he looked over himself, wondering how she thought of him as sexy. Feeling very good of himself, he got up and walked in the kitchen to see what she was cooking.

It seemed like she was cooking pancakes, but she looked somewhat nervous. He couldn’t think of why, except that she had told him he was sexy.

Kal walked over to where she was cooking and wrapped his right arm around her shoulders. Then, he said, “If it makes you feel any better, I think your sexy, too.”

“Oh…Really?”

“Yes, and beautiful. Don’t be embarrassed.” He smiled and kissed her cheek.

Kat rubbed her cheek where he had kissed it. “You know, that gets me even more suspicious. Something else happened, right?”

“No…Oh! You were trying to light a candle, and you kept dropping it. I asked you if you were drunk, and you told me the candle was because it kept dropping.”

She laughed. “That’s it?”

“That’s it.” He walked towards the table to sit down.

“Well, I shouldn’t have left you here alone. I shouldn’t have gotten drunk. It’s just that Asten proposed to me…”

Kalan froze. “He…Y’all are dating?!” He felt heartbroken. He thought Kat and Asten were just friends.

“Well, not for real. It’s a little joke he likes to play. When he really wants something from me - in this case, it was staying to drink rum - he’ll propose to me and call me ‘love’ and ‘darling’ and ‘baby’. It’s really funny.”

“Oh…okay. I was getting scared.” He let out a sigh of relief.

“Scared? Scared of what?”

“Well…I…I”

“Like me?”

“I…what?”

“You like me. I can see it in your eyes.”

“And what if I did? What would you say?”

“I’d say…” She walked over to Kalan and wrapped her arms around his neck. “I’d say I’ve been wanting to kiss you for a very long time.”

“You have?” he asked as he placed his hands around her face.

“Yes…I have. Kal…”

She would have finished her sentence, but Kalan had leaned over and pressed his lips to hers. She opened her mouth, not to speak, but to accept his kiss. She buried her fists in his black, tangled hair. His hands still framed her face. She never knew that someone could stir so much inside of her with their kiss alone. When their lips parted, she forgot what she was going to say.

“Maikat…” Kal said.

“Yes?”

“Your pancakes are burning.”

--------------------

Scaliber smiled as he watched them kiss. He knew Sade would love this. He quickly, but quietly, made his way back to where she would be.

I wonder if she’ll still want to kill him. It would be great because she loves him, too. I don’t know. Sade is very unpredictable and extremely clever. She’ll more than likely scold me for leaving them alone. Then, I’ll tell her about the kiss, and she’ll forget all about it!

“My lady! My lady!” he whispered as she came into sight.

“Shut up, you idiot!” she answered. “What are you doing here? You should be watching those other two!”

“My lady…I will return to them, but I have something that will please you.”

“Please me?”

“They just kissed, my lady.”

“Kissed?”

“A kiss is something humans do to express their love for each other.”

“Oh, I see.”

“They love each other.”

“Really? Wonderful, Scaliber.”

“I knew you’d like it. Same plan as before?”

“I suppose. I don’t know. I’ll think about it. Go back to them, and thank you, Scaliber.”

“Your most welcome, my lady.”

--------------------

As Maikat ate her breakfast, she was too embarrassed to even look at Kalan. It confused him. How could he make her that nervous? Maybe she was just naturally that shy?

“Would you like to go to Cassandra’s for lunch today?” Maikat asked him.

“Sure.”

“Asten will be there. He goes there for most of his meals. He can’t cook.”

“Poor guy. I can cook.”

“You can?”

“Sure can. We ought to get there early and see if Cass will let me help her.”

“That’d be great, Kal.”

“Maikat…” Kal reached across the small table and held her hand. “I won’t hurt you.”

“I know you won’t, Kal.”

“I promise I won’t hurt you. I’m not like Axhel.”

“I promise I won’t hurt you either.”

“Stop counting your yesterdays, and start counting your tomorrows.”

“That’s a good saying.”

“Amoya used to always tell me that. She would want me to move on, and so I am. Kat…I love you.”

“Don’t say the ‘l’ word unless you really mean it.”

“I mean it. I never believed in love at first sight…until I met you.”

“Kal…”

“I mean it, and I promise I’ll never hurt you.”

A tear rolled down her cheek. “Okay…”

“Come here.”

He still held her hand as she got up and walked over to him. She sat in his lap and wrapped her arms around his chest. Then, she buried her face in his shoulder.

“It’s okay to cry,” he told her. “It’s okay to cry.”

So, she cried. She felt safe to cry. She was safe in his embrace, and he would never hurt her. He promised her that, and she knew she could believe in that promise.

“Kal…I forgot to tell you something.”

“What is it?”

“Promise me you won’t be mad that I didn’t tell you before.”

Part 8 - Missing Links

He walked along the dirt path just outside the village. His silver hair blew into his face. Asten carried a small box in his hand. Inside was a gold locket, which he got from Cassandra. The box was an ocean blue with a lime green bow on top. When he finally reached the old cabin, he hid the box behind his back.

“Asten! You’re here!” he heard the young girl call.

“Hey, Ella!“

A small elven girl, who couldn’t be no more than eight years old, ran up to him and hugged him. She had short, blonde hair that came to her chin with short, straight bangs. She had ice blue eyes and a face like that of an angel’s. She wore a navy skirt that came to her knees and a white blouse.

Ella lived with her grandparents in the cabin after her parents died a mysterious death. For some reason, she had become attached to Asten.

Asten had to kneel in order for her to reach him. Then, he pulled the box from behind his back. “I have something for you.”

“Really? For me?”

“It was Cassandra’s. She said I should give it to you.”

“Oh, wow. What is it, Asten?” Her blue eyes flashed with childish curiosity.

“Open it.”

Ella quickly pulled the top of the box off and saw the locket. Her smile lit up her whole face as she pulled it out and looked at it. “It’s beautiful!”

“You think so?”

“Oh, yes!” She wrapped her arms around his neck. Even though he had kneeled down on one knee, she still had to stand on her tiptoes. “Thank you, Asten!”

“Your welcome. Is your Grandfather home?”

“No, he went to the village for some kind of adult thing, but Grandma’s home!”

“Okay. Did you hear about Kat’s visitor?”

“Uh huh! I heard Grandma and Grandpa talking about him. Why is he here?”

“He got hurt,” Asten said, picking up Ella and putting her on his shoulders.

“You think I’ll be as tall as you one day?”

“Almost as tall.”

She started playing with his hair. “Asten, you need a haircut.”

“Why do you say that?”

She pulled a barrette out of her pocket and continued to play with his hair. She gathered a lot of his hair on top and put the barrette in, so his hair was sticking straight up. “’Cause I can do that!”

“What did you do?”

“I fixed your hair to make it look pretty!”

“Guys don’t like to look pretty; they just like to look at pretty girls.”

“Like me?”

“Yeah, like you. I guess I better start spending every night up here chasing little boys away.” They reached the front porch of the cabin and he put her down. She stood in the middle of the doorway, blocking his way. He smiled at her and reached out to tickle her.

“Tag! You’re it!” She said, slapping his hand and taking off running through the house.

“Oh, no you don’t!” he called.

She ran into her bedroom and slammed the door. When he tried to open it, she was trying as hard as she could to hold it closed. He didn’t dare bust it open; he didn’t want to hurt her.

“I’m about to break this door down! You better run!” he said.

He heard her scream and footsteps head to the other side of the room.

“One…Two…Three!”

He opened the door, but didn’t see her. Then, he heard a soft giggling coming from under the bed. He slowly made his way to the bed and looked under it.

“Oh, no!” she screamed.

“Oh, yes!” He reached under the bed and pulled her out. Then, he tickled her until she couldn’t breath. “Ready to give up?”

“Yes…”

“I was wondering what all the screaming was about,” said a voice. An older elven woman stood in the doorway of Ella’s bedroom.

“Oh, hello, Mrs. Macey.”

“Hi, Grandma!”

“Asten, I just made a pot of tea. Would you like some?” she said.

“Yes, please.”

“Aww…” Ella complained. “Aren’t you going to play with me?”

“I though you gave up.”

“Oh, Asten. You know I didn’t mean that!”

“Well, I’m tired. I’ll play with you later. I promise.”

“Mm-kay!”

--------------------

“I promise, Kat. I will never be mad at you.”

“Okay…I am Earth.”

“You…you are?”

“Yes…I should have told you before, when you said that you were Air. I’m so stupid.”

“Kat, stop putting yourself down so much. You’re not stupid. You weren’t forced to tell me anything. That’s who you are, and you can tell whoever you want to whenever you want to.”

“Stop making excuses for me.”

“I’m not making excuses. I’m stating a fact. Forget about it. I know now. You can’t change the past, but you can control the future.”

“All right.”

“Listen to me. You’re not stupid. You’re not any of the things you think you are. Believe me when I say that.”

“I believe you, Kal. I trust you. I trust more than anyone. Kal I…”

“What is it?”

“I…I think we should get going to Cassandra’s. Asten won’t be there yet. I think he was going to Mr. and Mrs. Macey’s house.”

“Who?”

“Asten’s best friend’s parents. He and his wife died last year mysteriously. Cassandra and Asten were only children when they were banned from the Heavens. Jacob and Asten had been friends since then. Then, Jacob married Pamela. They had a daughter, Ella. He promised that he would watch over her.”

“Oh…I see. How old is she?”

“Eight. She was seven when her parents died. No one has a clue what happened to them. They just…disappeared.”

“Why were Asten and Cassandra banned from the Heavens, anyway?”

“Asten was accused of raping another angel. The angel who he supposedly raped hated him, though. I don’t think he did it, and Asten just isn’t the type that would be that way. Cassandra told the gods that if they were going to throw Asten out, they would have to throw her out, too. But ever since then, Asten has never really talked to many girls. The only girls he has ever talked to, Cassandra had to talk to them first. He doesn’t want to be accused of anything again.”

“I see what you mean.”

“Yeah. Asten’s innocent, though.”

“I believe that he is.”

“So does everyone else.”

“Well, we better get to Cassandra’s.”

“Yeah. And, Kal?”

“Yeah?”

“Don’t tell Asten I told you that.”

--------------------

“So…” the old woman started. “That’s already two of the elements. There’s only two more to go!”

“I don’t think Kalan will want to go to Obscurite for a while, though.”

“I see what you mean.”

“I don’t even think Kat would want to go there. She prefers to stay at home and be with her friends. She’s not adventurous at all.”

“No, she isn’t, but I bet she would do it if she had to. She loves you and Cassandra so much. She would do anything for the sake of you two.”

“She would, and that’s what scares me.”

“What do you mean?”

“She would lay her life down for us. If she ever did, there would be a war, and you know our kind cannot make it.”

“No, the demons are so powerful.”

“Exactly.”

“Well, I guess all we can do is…wait and see what happens.”

Just then, Ella ran into the room with a serious look on her face.

“Yeah, I guess so.” Asten said.”

“Guess what?” Ella asked.

“What do you look so serious about?”

“You promised.”

“I did.”

“Well?”

“I broke a promise.” He hid his smile with his cup of tea.

“That’s not fair!”

“Fine then.” He put the cup down turned to glare at her. Then, he quickly jumped out of his chair and ran after her. The chase was on once again, but he caught her quicker this time.

She giggled. “I bet you’ll catch the boys quicker than that, though.”

“I sure will. And about that…When ever anyone tries to mess with you, you just scream my name as loud as you can.”

“Okay, Asten!”

Her sparkling blue eyes stared intensely into his, which were a dark brown. Her smile was thin, yet radiant, and her small fingers twisted in his hair.

“She looks like her daddy, doesn’t she?” asked Mrs. Macey.

“Yeah…” Asten sighed. “She does.”

Part 9 - A New Feeling

“Asten! Hi!” Cassandra said. “It’s about time you made it back!”

“Well, I promised Ella I would play with her again after I talked to her grandmother.”

“Ah. That explains it. Well, we just got through cooking lunch. Kalan helped me make some of it.”

“What have we got here?” He asked sniffing the air.

“Well,” Maikat started, “we fixed chicken Alfredo, and we’re going to make some milkshakes later.”

“Sounds great, darling. Fix me a plate, please.”

“Of course, dear.”

After they ate and enjoyed their small talk, the four of them started drinking their milkshakes. Kal gave Asten jealous looks at first every time he called her “dear” or “darling”, but he eventually got used to the joke and paid it no attention to it at all. Cassandra noticed Kal’s attitude and numerously mouthed the words, “I think he’s jealous” to Kat. She only blushed, remembering that morning.

Cassandra and Asten started to accept Kal as part of their group. He cracked a few jokes every now and then. He was mostly down-to-earth, not to mention handsome. He fit in with them. They really cracked up when he told them about when Kat came in drunk the night before. She just sat there and hid her face in her hands as she had to hear the whole story over again. Of course, Asten patted her back and asked her why she never told him that he was sexy.

“Well…this morning…” Kal continued.

Kat looked up. He wasn’t really going to tell them that, was he?

“This morning…she had a hangover and burnt our pancakes.”

“You’re kidding!” Cassandra exclaimed.

Maikat sighed with relief. She didn’t want them to know about their kiss yet.

“Actually…I am. Something else happened.” He looked at Maikat and smiled.

“Whoa. What did y’all do? Never mind. I don’t want to know.” Asten said. “I want my milkshake to stay in my stomach.

“Oh, please, Asten!” Kat groaned.

“Tell us what happened!” Cassandra said, scooting her chair closer to Kal.

“Well…She found out I had the hots for her.”

“Hey, now,” Asten said standing up and facing Kalan. “That’s my woman you got the hots for.”

“Shut up, Asten!” Cass and Kat shouted at the same time. He obediently sat back down and didn’t say another word.

“So, I kissed her,” Kal continued. “And then she burnt the pancakes.”

“Ah…I see.” Cassandra nodded. “Can I have a kiss, too?”

“Uh, sorry.”

“Darn.”

“Great. First, you steal my wife. Now, you’re going to take away my big sister. Oh, the nerve of some folks!”

“Asten…” Kat said in a half scold.

“Yes, love?”

“Shut up.”

“Yes, ma’am.”

--------------------

That afternoon, Maikat and Kalan went to the village. There, Maikat would introduce Kalan to everyone and maybe eat dinner somewhere. It was a neat little village. There were some houses; most of the houses surrounded the village. There was a small diner and a variety of stores. There was a small market and ,of course, a temple for praying.

There were other villages in the forest, but they weren’t nearby. There were many other villages. The Banni Forest was as big as Royaume, but it wasn’t near as populated.

“Maikat! Maikat! Over here! I want to meet your friend!” yelled a dark-haired girl. She was a few inches shorter than Kat, but weighed more. She had deep blue eyes which stood out against her black-brown hair.

Maikat rolled her eyes and began walking towards her, pulling Kalan behind her. “That’s Tali, the most annoying person in the village.”

“Thanks for the warning,” he replied.

“Oh, he’s so handsome!” she squealed as she ran up to him and pinched his biceps.

Kalan cocked an eyebrow. “Ma’am, you’re not setting a good example for the children when you’re drunk in the early afternoon.”

Maikat tried to choke back a laugh.

“He’s funny, too!” Tali said. “You’ve got yourself a winner.” She winked at Kat.

“Tali, we-”

“Good luck, you two!” She turned and walked into one of the shops.

“Remind me…” Kal said,” to not go into that shop later on.”

“Shut up!” Kat said slapping his stomach. “And don’t accuse people of being drunk already. It’s not a good example for the children.”

Kal smiled. “You sure thought it was funny.”

“It was funny, but wrong.”

“You’re the boss.”

Kat paused. “Me? I’m the boss?”

“Yup.”

“Okay, then. Bow to me.”

“Well, we won’t go that far.”

“I thought so.”

The two of them walked through the village and spoke to everyone they ran into. All the while, a group of demons followed close behind in the shadows. They watched them closely everywhere they went. They went to eat at the diner at dusk. The demons watched them as they would chat about embarrassing moments in their life, their childhood, their hopes and dreams, their fears and failures, and their beliefs.

Maikat ran into a tree, once, because she was trying to talk to a guy she had a crush on. She was only eleven at the time. She spent most of her time when she was a child playing with Cassandra and Asten. They would play outside and pretend that they were a group of adventurers seeking the elements, and Asten would always be the bad guy and kidnap one of the girls. She hoped to find the other elements and prevent the war. She also hoped to, one day, make peace with Royaume. She feared demons and vampires, and she was scared of someone she loved very much dying. She failed to be the woman her parents had wanted her to be. They wanted her to be a nurse like Cassandra. Instead, she gathered herbs and sold them in the village sometimes. She didn’t believe in happy endings until she met Kal, and she didn’t believe that anything in life was simple.

Kalan told Kat how his friends threw a snake on him at a BBQ, and he screamed like a girl. He was a teenager then. He told her stories about his abusive father and how he was suicidal. He told her about how he would be dead if Amoya had not come into his life. He hoped to, one day, help children with abusive parents and tell them his story and how he escaped it. He also, like Kat, wanted to find the remaining two elements. He had always feared snakes, which is why his friends threw one on him in the first place. He was also scared of not being able to protect Kat and have to watch her die like he did Amoya. He failed to be the son that his father wanted him to be: perfect. He failed to save his mother when she died, as he did Amoya. He believed in fate and destiny, and he believed that everyone has a purpose.

It was night when they came out of the diner. They made their way back to Maikat’s house and went inside.

“Kat…” he said grabbing her waist and pulling her closer to him.

“Hm?” She wrapped her arms around his neck and arched her back to where she looked straight up at him. Green eyes to gold. Each of their facial expressions showed hope, and their souls felt freedom. For a while, there was silence, and Kal leaned over towards Kat and kissed her lips.

His kiss stunned her, and his hands moved up her arched back. She closed her eyes and returned the kiss. She felt safe in his arms. No one and nothing could hurt her now. For the first time in her life, she felt passionate about something. As for Kal, he didn’t know what he felt, but it was something he had never felt before. It made his heart feel light and heavy at the same time. His blood seemed to rush through his veins and slow down again. He felt like he was no longer in control of himself. He had never felt this way when he was with Amoya.

He felt hopeful when he was with her. He felt secure. Never anything like this.

Their lips parted, but their eyes remained closed. Then, Maikat leaned forwards and buried her face into his chest, placing her arms around it and hugging him as tight as she could.

“I don’t think I want to let go,” she said.

“Why?”

“Because…I love you, Kal.”

Kal dropped his head and kissed the top of hers. “I love you, too.”

--------------------

Sade smiled to herself evilly as she always did. The demons returned to her and reported what they saw.

“Hmm…” she said. “I think we should let the girl watch her friends die, then drag her lover off into the woods and kill him. We won’t let her watch him die, so she’ll have to suffer with wondering what happened to him. What do you think, Scaliber?”

“Wonderful plan, my lady. Shall we attack now?”

“Yes…We shall.”

Part 10 - Heartbroken

Kalan and Maikat were sitting in her room talking when they heard someone on the front porch. They heard a loud “thump” and snickering.

“What was that?” Maikat asked.

“I’ll see what it is,” Kal told her.

“No. Let me. It’s probably someone from the village who wants to see me anyway.”

“Okay.”

Kal sat on the bed and watched her leave the room. He was worried, though. Something told him that there was something wrong. He heard her open the door, and he heard rushing footsteps on the porch. He didn’t hear any voices, and knew for sure that something was wrong. He ran out of the room and to the front door. Two demons were standing there. One of them was holding Maikat hostage. One hand held a knife to her throat; the other covered her mouth. Tears streamed down her face.

“Do as we tell you, or I’ll slit her throat,” the one with the knife told him.

“Anything. Just don’t hurt her,” Kal said.

“Come with us.”

Kal followed the demons through the woods. He noticed that they were headed towards Cassandra’s house. In the distance, he heard more demons snickering. He heard a female voice trying to calm them down, whom he took as the leader. Soon, they were in front of Cassandra’s house with a small army of demons.

“Oh, Scaliber! I see you have returned!” the leader said.

“Yes, Sade,” the one holding Kat hostage said. “I think we’re ready.”

“Well, y’all know what to do. Go!”

The demon named Scaliber still held the knife to Kat’s throat. The one he was with kept an eye on Kal. Two demons went into the woods somewhere. Maikat noticed that they were going towards the Maceys’ house. One went into Asten’s house, and the last one went into Cassandra’s.

Asten tried to put up a fight against the demon. Instead, it dragged him out of the house by his hair. He tried to fight it, but it had put a spell on him to where he couldn’t move. Cassandra came running out of her house.

“Leave my brother alone!” She yelled, swinging her fists as hard as she could at the demon.

“Silence, bitch!” it screamed at her, punching her in the face. She hit the ground.

“Cassandra, run!” Kalan called. “Get away from here!”

The demon standing next to him muttered a language which he couldn’t understand. Suddenly, Kal dropped to his knees. He couldn’t feel the lower part of his body. When he tried to speak, nothing came out.

The demon holding Asten by his hair let him go for a moment. Asten lay on the ground. He could hardly breathe. As he struggled for air, he watched the demon draw a sword.

“No! Leave her alone!” he managed to choke out. He clung onto the demon’s pants, but it was no use. The demon brought the sword down onto her neck, cutting her head off.

Maikat struggled against the demon and got free of the hand covering her mouth. “Cassandra!”

Scaliber grunted as if annoyed and covered her mouth again. “You shut the hell up!”

Kal would have probably killed Scaliber if he could have moved. He would have killed all of them, or have at least died trying. Kat looked at him, her eyes swollen from crying. Then, he mouthed the words, “I love you.” Since her mouth was covered, all she could do was nod her head to say that she loved him, too.

Thoughts raced through Kal’s head. He remembered the first time he saw her. She had rescued him. He was lost somewhere between life and death, but it was like she gave him a second chance. She gave him a new beginning when everything seemed to come to an end. His love for her was the truest magic. She helped him leave his past behind. They became closer. They made promises and confessed their secrets to each other. She was the missing link from his life, and she made him feel a whole new feeling he had never felt before: passion.

They stared at each other for the longest time, lost in memories of the past few days.

A high-pitched scream filled the air. It came from somewhere in the woods. “Asten! Asten!”

“Ella!” Asten yelled. “I’m coming, Ella!” But, he didn’t go anywhere. He still couldn’t move because of the demon’s spell. He fought it as hard as he could, but he couldn’t move. Cassandra’s blood formed in a puddle around him.

The two demons that went into the woods came back with Ella shortly after. She was kicking and hitting them, but she was too small to hurt them. The demon standing next to Asten turned towards him, and the other two let Ella down on the ground. She was too terrified to move until she saw the demon raise his sword above Asten.

“Asten!” She screamed, running towards him. She threw herself in front of him and wrapped her arms around his neck. He was laying down, so she had to kneel in Cassandra’s blood to do so. “Please, mister. Leave him alone.” She cried into Asten’s shoulder.

“Go, Ella,” he told her.

“I won’t leave you.”

“Go, now!” He was crying now.

“But they’ve already killed Grandma and Grandpa. If they kill you, I’ll be all alone. Asten…”

“I’m sorry, Ella. Please, go.”

The demon became annoyed. “Shut the hell up! Both of you! I’m sure I can solve your problem!” With that, he drove the sword into Ella’s chest. She screamed, and blood started rushing out of her mouth. Tears streamed down her face and mixed with her blood.

With her last breath, before the demon withdrew the sword, she mumbled, “I think I see Mommy and Daddy…”

Her small hands still clung onto Asten’s shirt. Maikat couldn’t look over there. She knew that they were about to kill Asten, but she couldn’t understand why they were doing this. Then, she looked at Kalan. Were they attacking here to finish him off? They didn’t kill him when he was in Obscurite, so they had to come and finish the job?

She then heard the tearing of flesh, and she knew that Asten was dead. She started puking, but since Scaliber was still holding his hand over her mouth, it got all over him.

“Yuck. Crazy bitch!” he said while he wiped her vomit off on Cassandra’s body.

When she was through, she began to wipe away some of her tears. She looked at Kalan. His once bright, beautiful, golden eyes were dark and full of misery. Tears flowed from them. Tears for her. He was scared that he would have to watch her die like he did Amoya. He wanted to protect her, but the demon’s spell was too strong. There was nothing he could do, but he refused to give up. He tried to fight the spell, but only made himself weaker. Kat knew what he was doing and what he was thinking, so she turned around and slung her fist as hard as she could below Scaliber’s sternum. It knocked the breath out of him, and he passed out. The remaining five demons, ran towards her and threw her on the ground. She screamed and kicked them, but nothing she did seemed to work. Sade stood near the edge of the woods and watched everything with amusement.

“Come on,” she said. “The other elves may have heard their pathetic screams. We should kill the boy now.”

“No!” Maikat screamed at her. “Kill me instead! Leave him alone!”

“Child…” Sade reasoned. “He is the reason we’re here. He is the reason your friends are dead, and you want to save him. Silly girl. Do you know nothing? He led us here, straight to you. We’re actually doing you a favor.”

“No! It wasn’t his fault. He was only trying to help people! You’re wrong!”

“Oh, shut up, will you? I have better things to do other than listen to your excuses and watch you cry your pitiful tears!”

She obeyed her and bowed her head in defeat. She didn’t blame Kal at all. Kal loved her.

Sade nodded to two of the demons that were holding her down, and they came forward and grabbed Kalan by his arms. He was still unable to move as they dragged him into the woods, but he started getting his voice back.

“No!” Kat screamed. “Please, don’t do it!”

“Kat! The truest magic lies within the heart. I’ll be there!” he called back to her.

“Don’t say that, Kalan. You’re not going to die!”

Then, he was out of sight, and Kat knew she would never see him again. Sade walked up to her and looked down on her, shaking her head.

“Please…” Kat begged. “If you’re going to kill him, kill me, too.”

“No, six lives is enough for one night. Let’s go, you three. And someone please grab Scaliber.”

“Yes, my lady,” they said as they picked up Scaliber and followed Sade.

Kat sat in the grass, paralyzed by what she had seen. She didn’t know what to do. Cassandra, Asten, Ella, the Maceys and Kalan were dead. Well, Kalan was about to die anyway. Kat sat in the middle of the yard and cried. There was nothing she could do but cry.

I guess I’ll have to count my tomorrows, she thought, My tomorrows with no friends. No Kalan. Nothing.

She looked up to the sky and tried to pray.

Please, gods. I can’t lose him, too. I can’t go through with this.

She closed her eyes and tried to remember him. She tried to remember the good times she had with him. All of her memories of him were good except this particular night.

I’m going to miss him, she thought. I’m going to miss those golden eyes. I’m going to miss his captivating smile. I’m going to miss his enchanting kiss. I’m going to miss his loving and secure embrace. I’m going to miss that passionate feeling I had with him. And, most of all, I’m going to miss his voice…I loved his voice. I swear I could sit and listen to his voice for hours. It soothed me. He was so kind and compassionate. He loved me so much. He was gentle and patient. He was beautiful inside and out. He was so complex. He was so…perfect…

“Let me go!” Kalan said raising his voice at them.

“Why should we?” asked one of the demons. “Why would we?”

The other demon laughed. “Should we chop off his head?”

“No, we did that to the Fallen.”

“Stab him in the chest?”

“We did that to the little brat.”

“Slit his throat?”

“We did that to the other Fallen.”

“Then, what should we do?”

“I don’t know. I don’t care.”

“Just knock him in the back of the head hard enough to kill him.”

“Yeah, I guess that works.”

The demons stared down at Kalan. He knelt before them to accept his death. He figured they had already killed Maikat, so he could at least be with her. The demon raised his sword to where the blade pointed up. His body cringed as he saw the demon raise the sword, but his heart was smiling. They had surely killed Maikat as well. At least he could be with her. That was all that mattered to him. He didn’t care what his father had told him years before. He needed Kat, and he loved her. He then felt a sharp pain in the back of his head, and everything went black.
