Caleb Shore

Post by Soran Nightblade »

1) Name: Caleb Shore

2) Gender: Male

3) Age: 26

4) Race: Human

5) Job/Class: Blacksmith/Scholar

6) Power: Very high intelligence and resourcefulness. He is also in excellent shape, and although not formally trained in weapons, has the sharp wits and physical strength to improvise and strategize in a fight or urgent situation.

7) Appearance: Caleb has long brown hair that he usually keeps pulled back with a cord. Shorter locks hang loose around his face. He is a moderately tall, leanly built man with muscular arms and torso. His eyes are a dark honey color, and he tends to regard others with an expression of either complete disinterest or composed disdain.

8) Weaknesses: Caleb’s general tendency to look down on others and generally reserved nature often cause him to miss out on the benefits of proper relationships with others. Though he is extremely capable and fiercely independent, there are occasions where he could actually benefit from the input or assistance of others – opportunities he almost always neglects to take advantage of.

9) Biography: Caleb was born in Lowight. Despite being an excellent student who often ‘outgrew’ the level of his own instructors, he was a ‘difficult’ child whose extraordinary brightness intimidated and eventually infuriated his teachers. His intelligence alienated him from the other students as well, while Caleb’s own frustration and confusion at the growing differences between himself and his peers became more and more obvious. His parents finally sent him to a private highschool for ‘gifted’ children in Hepian.

Starting fresh in a new place, he gave the attitude change a try, he really did, but the end result was much the same as his original school. His professors grudgingly graduated him with perfect marks, and rather than return home, Caleb chose to take up residence in Hepian. He apprenticed himself to a blacksmith who cared little for conversation and, therefore, got along decently with Caleb in a strictly-business sort of way. The boy quickly mastered the trade, studying physics and mechanics on the side and improvising new inventions and tools with the skills his master taught him. When the old man retired, Caleb established his own forge in the town. He made no enemies, but also no close friends. Still, he did a good job, the best in town, so he did good business.

However, there came a day when a regular customer asked him to look after his young daughter for a few hours while he worked on his piece. Caleb grudgingly agreed. The young lady was studying sorcery and developed a strong crush on Caleb. However, she found that although he was cordial and polite to a “T”, it was impossible to get any closer to him. Her crush grew into a bitter infatuation over the following months. Finally, she grew so maddened by his indifference that she endeavored a curse against him to teach him the value of love. However, the same day the sorcery was attempted, the city of Hepian was burned to the ground by Arken’s forces.
Whatever the young woman’s spell was intended to do, and whether it actually worked as intended, the answer died with her that day. All Caleb knows is the infuriating end result of the curse: During the hours when the sun is risen, his body is transformed into that of a sugar glider. At night, he returns to his human shape. This makes him extremely vulnerable during the daytime.

10) Personality: On first meeting, Caleb will seem sharp-witted and almost achingly polite in his interactions. However, that is about as far as you will get with him. He has a keen understanding of social protocol, but very little appreciation for it. He does not seek companionship or feedback from others, and tends to look down on the people around him. By all appearances, he has no need for meaningful relationships beyond those needed to sustain his livelihood and obligatory status in society. And yet, he has a strange way of occasionally sliding in a job despite having said there was no time that day or lowering a price on his smithing services for a client despite having plenty of other business. However, he cloaks these exceptions with such well-crafted logical explanations that it becomes unclear whether kindness ever actually came into play.

11) Extras: Sugar gliders are marsupials small enough to fit in one’s palm. They eat insects and fruits and possess flaps of skin on their sides that let them glide through the air for short distances, like flying squirrels.
