Lore: The Seer of Lies

City closest to the Border and possibly the nicest. Most of the pure of hearts and the good people who were trapped in Arken when the Border was forged live here to escape the evil in the land... it doesn't work.

"Maybe you should have been scared, Tenele," he said, and a low tremor of anger that he'd been withholding showed through. "I told you to get away. You agreed to cooperate. Why didn't you listen?" His voice had grown hard, anger and a reminiscent shred of the fear he'd felt before rising up in it as he spoke.

Tenele didn't say anything. She could point out the fact she couldn't get away because one of her legs were broken and one of her arms. It would have been pointless. She wouldn't have made it far. Not to mention he had grabbed her arm and refused to let go. She didn't point that out because she didn't want him blaming himself.

Instead she slowly and reluctantly pulled her hand away from his and turned her eyes to the ceiling. "I don't know," she replied faintly. Deciding to play dumb for the moment. "I guess fear isn't something that affects me anymore." Of course this very well could be a lie.

Vlad shook his head and looked away, like he was too frustrated to respond. Tenele didn't seem to have enough respect for his inner monster. It was part of what he was. He was suspicious that she was trying to pretend it wasn't. Why did that bother him so much?

Because he'd decided he had feelings for her, he thought. Because he expected more of her than he did other humans. She expected her to accept his monster, but he expected her to respect it, too. To know when to fear it. He wasn't a tame beast to anyone but Sinead, and it wasn't going to change.

Or maybe he was taking it all out on her because he didn't want to admit that maybe this kind of relationship didn't make sense. Maybe it wouldn't work. How could he possibly be in love with some human girl? One Sinead didn't want him to touch? The no life king thumped his head against the wall in a bored, restless motion.

Tenele sat there in uncomfortable silence for a moment, shifting back to the center of the bed with a groan. She sat there even longer and then after a moment she sighed. "Fine," she said, looking away. "It scared me... I thought I was going to die. Why do you think I tried to get you off with that pendant? I thought you were going to kill me..." She continued to stare away from him, her eyes watering. "Then again for a week I've been thinking I was going to die. Every day when they came for me I thought I would die that day. Everyday I didn't I wish I would have. So maybe it did scare me. But, so have the other demons and barbaric men that Shea had under her wing when they took me."

Vlad's expression softened somewhat at her words. He was being pretty hard on her. Sympathy wasn't his strong point, but lately he was learning it. He didn't say anything about how each of the days she'd been gone he'd been sitting there thinking she might not come back. That would just be corny, and he wasn't sure he wanted to admit he was that love-struck. "Sorry," he said, and really wasn't sure which thing he was apologizing for. He decided to let it be up to her. If she wanted him to be sorry for it, he would be. "I really am sorry. I thought I'd kill you. I got scared. I'm not good at being scared. Out of practice," he said.

Tenele finally looked back at him, studying him with her peircing green eyes. She reached out with his hand again. "I was scared," she said softly squeezing his hand. "But, I knew it wasn't you. It was... what is inside you. What they made... but not the Vlad I know."

Vlad didn't know why, but it felt good to hear her say that, in a very strange way. Most of the people around him, including Sinead, valued or feared him as a no life king. His personality was negligible. Tenele seemed to prioritize backwards. But then, it shouldn't have been such a surprise. He wouldn't care about her if she was like everyone else. He reached out and touched her hand. His fingers were still smeared with dried blood, as was most of him, but he took her hand anyway. He stood and moved to sit on the bed next to her, his back leaning against the headboard. He sat there holding her hand, and felt content. "If you want to sleep, you can," he said, taking a wet cloth that was left at the side of the bed and using it to wipe off his face. He held back a hiss as he touched his right cheek, and decided not to clean that part.

Tenele watched him for a moment as he cleaned himself and then she shifted over in her bed, watching him. "I'm sorry... about that..." she said softly and then gave him a gentle smile. "Will you hold me?" she wanted him to hold her until she fell a sleep. Maybe his strong presence would keep the ever haunting nightmares away. Maybe he would fall a sleep with her?

Vlad looked down at her, a little surprised that she'd asked. But she had. Call it paranoia after being attacked by 5 ripoff monsters at once, but he didn't feel like lying down just yet. He realized that he was still expecting more to come. He decided to screw it all. He placed a hand between her shoulderblades and helped her sit up for a minute, sliding in behind her with one leg on each side of her body, and drew her carefully back so she could lean into him like a big pillow. He eased his arms around her neck so that they draped lightly over her chest, and found the position surprisingly comfortable. Plus, he could still watch the whole room. Good compromise.

Tenele sighed as she leaned agains him, the medicine the doctors had given her was beginning to set in and the room seemed to be made of water. She tilted her head upwards, looking at Vlad for a breif moment. Then she leaned her head to the side, her hand idly rubbing Vlad's arm. "I love you..." she whispered faintly, her body growing heavier. She slipped further and further into the darkness and her hand slid from his arm, resting gently in her lap.

Vlad looked down at her dozing form thoughtfully, rolling the words over in his mouth. They felt alien, and it surprised him a little how fluidly he'd said them before on the street. He held her shoulders a little tighter, "I meant it," he said quietly.

Tenele was breathing gently against Vlad. Every now and then her head would turn and she would make a funny noise and at first it seemed so peaceful. Then, her eyes began to flutter quickly, though she never woke and it was as if she were seeing something her dreams the disturbed her. Her breath began to quicken and she twitched slightly. Then, as if whatever in her dreams suddenly escelated to a point she could no longer contain herself she gasped in fear and rammed her elbow back into Vlad's gut. She through that very arm back behind her and whacked him in the forehead, crying out in sudden terror. She was fighting in her dreams and her body was acting out the parts that were more vivid. "Gods no..." she breathed faintly. Then she whacked Vlad in the head again, screaming in full out petrified terror. She came awake suddenly, panting and trembling. Frantic she glanced around feeling someone behind her. Worriedly she looked up with those fear filled eyes. Suddenly they relaxed when she realized it was Vlad behind her. No one else. Just him.

Vlad hadn't slept. Hadn't even begun to sleep. He was watching out over the room, not necessarily on edge, but ready. He followed Tenele's small movements attentively, but was taken off guard when she elbowed him in the gut. If she could get him that hard, he no longer worried for her recovery. He peered at her, managing to tolerate her mild abuses. He had to dodge when her broken arm flung at him, not wanting to let her injure herself worse. But then she finally looked back at him with a look he was used to from other humans, but not from her. It was a look you gave to monsters. He met her eyes and looked at her quietly, waiting for her to see him, and after a moment she did. He'd had a feeling something like this might happen.

"You're safe," he said, as if he could read the question off her face. He leaned forward and placed a light kiss on her forehead.

She nodded slowly, closing her eyes and leaning against him. She hugged his arms to her with one hand, rubbing it idly with her finger tips. She was still trying to control her breath, glancing around for who ever had tormented her in her nightmares to step out of the shadows of the dark hospital ward. She pressed herself closer to him.

"Vlad," she said softly, with a drousy sound to her voice. "Can we talk about something?"

"Something in particular, or something as opposed to nothing?" Vlad asked, though he sounded fairly amenable to either.
